Meryl Streep, the acclaimed actress, was considered for the role of Rocky, the endearing alien in ‘Project Hail Mary,’ but the directors were hesitant to even approach her about it at first.
The sci-fi hit Project Hail Mary had a record-breaking opening weekend and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. TopMob praised it as a “spectacular space adventure” and highlighted Ryan Gosling’s outstanding performance.
In Project Hail Mary, a science teacher named Dr. Ryland Grace is sent on a critical mission to discover the cause of a strange event called The Petrova Line. This phenomenon is causing the sun to dim, which threatens to cool Earth and lead to humanity’s extinction within decades.
I absolutely loved the part where the main character meets Rocky, an alien from Erid! It was so cool seeing them try to communicate, and it was hilarious how they finally figured it out using a laptop translator. But honestly, one of the funniest things was when Meryl Streep did one of the rejected voices for Rocky – I was cracking up!
Phil Lord and Chris Miller used Sony’s Amy Pascal to recruit Meryl Streep for Project Hail Mary
Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of Project Hail Mary, shared that Ryan Gosling immediately agreed to the project after learning Meryl Streep would be involved.
Miller explained that after brainstorming, they jokingly wondered if they could get Meryl Streep involved. Ryan immediately responded that she was capable of anything, which they all agreed was ideal. However, they were then faced with the daunting task of actually asking her, as Miller admitted.
He explained they asked Sony producer Amy Pascal to connect them with the actress, as she’d worked with Meryl Streep on numerous films already. According to Lord, the filmmakers put off making the connection for a long time, but when Pascal finally did, she was fantastic.
Miller complimented Streep on her enthusiastic approach to the minor line, noting she experimented with countless takes, constantly asking, ‘What if I tried this? Or this?’ Both Miller and Lord found the entire scenario amusing – the idea of asking someone like Meryl Streep to rehearse as a discarded alien voice, even just in the mirror, was inherently funny.
