‘Project Hail Mary’ Directors Tease Andy Weir Unofficial Sci-Fi Trilogy

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directors behind the upcoming sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary (based on the book by Andy Weir), might be sticking with the genre – and with Weir’s work. Known for comedies like 21 Jump Street and animated films like The LEGO Movie, Lord and Miller previously directed some of Solo: A Star Wars Story before being replaced by Ron Howard. Despite that experience, they’re returning to science fiction with Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, and are potentially planning another sci-fi project for the future.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter while discussing Project Hail Mary, Lord and Miller revealed they have several projects in development – around seven or eight. The conversation then turned to the possibility of adapting another novel by Andy Weir, specifically Artemis. They’ve been working on an Artemis adaptation for years and now have a script Miller describes as “delightful.” He believes they’ve finally overcome the biggest challenge that had been preventing the project from moving forward.

We have a script called Artemis that we really like. For a long time, the biggest challenge was figuring out how to realistically show the low gravity environment of the moon, where gravity is about one-sixth of Earth’s. We believe we’ve now solved that problem, and the script is moving forward.

Although the directors haven’t officially announced their next film, they’re clearly enthusiastic about Artemis. The movie would tell the story of a smuggler caught up in a corporate plot on the moon, and the directors are working to make it happen. It could become the third film in a loose sci-fi series based on Andy Weir’s books, following Project Hail Mary and The Martian, and they plan to continue refining the script.

Ridley Scott’s 2015 film, The Martian, was a critical success, winning a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture and earning Matt Damon an award for his performance. Interestingly, it won as a Comedy or Musical, despite being a science fiction drama with some funny moments. Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay for Project Hail Mary, and he also wrote The Martian, showing he understands Andy Weir’s style well. However, Goddard may not be involved in the Artemis script, as Geneva Robertson-Dworet is currently working on the project. Robertson-Dworet previously wrote the 2018 Tomb Raider film and Captain Marvel.

The success of Project Hail Mary could pave the way for directors Lord and Miller to finally make their long-awaited film, Artemis. Strong audience interest in Project Hail Mary might be exactly what Artemis needs to get production underway. Early reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with the film currently boasting a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being described as both visually impressive and emotionally resonant. While book fans will appreciate the core story, the movie offers a fresh take designed to excite a wider audience. More information about Artemis is expected soon, depending on how well Project Hail Mary performs. Project Hail Mary is now playing in theaters, starting March 20th.
