Caio Bonfim accomplished his dream of winning a gold medal in race walking, but he lost his wedding ring in the process.
Race walking is an incredibly demanding endurance event in track and field. Athletes must always keep one foot on the ground while walking 20 kilometers as quickly as possible. It’s a regular part of the World Athletics Championships, most recently held in Tokyo in 2025.
Caio Bonfim of Brazil, a 34-year-old experienced competitor, was also present. He’s won medals at both the Olympics and World Championships, but is still seeking his first gold medal.
Man, I was really hyped for Bonfim in the 20km walk – he’s been *so* close to gold for years! I mean, he snagged silver at the Paris Olympics last year and has a bunch of world championship bronze medals. Everyone knows he never gives up. He already took silver in the 35km walk earlier in the week, so I knew he’d be going all out for the win in the 20km – it was set up to be a crazy finish!
GOLD, GOLD, GOLD 🇧🇷🇧🇷🥇🥇
Caio Bonfim has won gold in the 20km race walk at the World Athletics Championships, becoming Brazil’s most decorated athlete in World Championships history with a total of 4 medals!

Bonfim trades wedding ring for gold medal
Just three kilometers into the race, Bonfim discovered he’d lost his wedding ring. But instead of giving up, he stayed focused and steadily moved up through the pack. He passed both Zhaozhao Wang of China and Paul McGrath of Spain on the last lap, then sprinted to the finish line to win his first world title, proudly carrying the Brazilian flag.
He later joked that his wife wouldn’t mind the lost jewelry now that he’d finally won gold. For Bonfim, who had competed in eight World Championships without a win, the medal represented his perseverance throughout his career – a story he’ll be reminded of whenever he looks at the hand where his ring used to be.
