A footballer from Costa Rica is getting a lot of attention online after his engagement ended just days after he proposed. Fans of the opposing team are now teasing him about it.

It’s common to see marriage proposals at sporting events – fans have been popping the question at games for a long time. However, the athletes playing in those games generally prefer to keep their personal engagements private, away from the crowds.

Costa Rican footballer Derrikson, age 24, had a special moment after a recent game. Following his team Xelajú’s 4-2 victory over Marquense on February 15th, he proposed to his girlfriend, Wendy.

They celebrated their engagement with a hug and a kiss, and a video of the moment quickly went viral online.

Footballer Derrikson’s engagement ended days after viral video

Just a few days after that, on February 18th, the midfielder revealed that they had called off their engagement.

Derrikson announced on Instagram that their engagement has ended. They described the split as a tough time, but said they’re choosing to handle it with respect and maturity.

I don’t want to discuss any negative details about a past relationship that meant a lot to me. Right now, I’m prioritizing my work, my team, and my personal growth. I’m grateful for your understanding and support, and I ask for privacy as I move forward. Thank you.

According to La Nacion, Wendy responded to the situation with a post on social media, stating, “Ultimately, silence is the best response.” She has since made her Instagram profile private following the breakup.

Derrikson has also faced teasing from rival fans regarding his broken engagement. Many have been commenting “y tu novia?” – which means “and your girlfriend?” – on his social media posts.

This isn’t the strangest thing to happen at a soccer game recently. In Turkey, a player actually gave CPR to a seagull that was struck by a ball and fell to the ground.
