A group of around fifty supporters of Palestine rallied on Tuesday outside the premiere of “Captain America: Brave New World” in Hollywood, urging people to boycott the movie due to its depiction of Ruth Bat-Seraph (also known as Sabra), an Israeli superhero character, portrayed by Shira Haas.
Demonstrators carried banners with messages like “It’s time for Sabra to leave”, “Disney is complicit in genocide”, “Boycott ‘Captain America'” and “Pray for Princess Jasmine”. They shouted slogans such as “Liberate, liberate, liberate Palestine” and “Disney, Disney, you can’t escape this.
Introducing Sabra, formerly known as a Mossad agent in the comic books, stirred up debate amongst Palestinian readers. Marvel subsequently announced their intention to adopt a “fresh perspective” with this character for the upcoming series titled “Brave New World.”

The depiction of Sabra, previously portrayed as a Mossad operative in comics, led to heated discussions among Palestinian fans. Marvel later declared they would be handling this character differently for their upcoming production called “Brave New World”, adopting a new approach.
Marvel explained to EbMaster that although their characters and narratives draw inspiration from the comic books, they are creatively reimagined for modern screens and viewers. In particular, the filmmakers are adopting a novel perspective when developing the character Sabra, who debuted in the comics more than four decades ago.
In a subsequent statement, “Brave New World” producer Nate Moore clarified that the character Sabra, as portrayed in the movie, does not belong to Mossad but rather works within the U.S. government.
As a film enthusiast, I found it intriguing how many characters in the movie seemed to orbit around President Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford. Since Ruth is an employee working under him within the government, her insights into his character and Sam’s perspective create a conflict of sorts. Despite being a first-generation Israeli, Ruth’s professional life is embedded within the U.S. administration.
Initially, Sarba made her debut in a comic book titled “The Incredible Hulk” during the 1980s. Her introduction stirred controversy as she became a symbol of Marvel’s involvement in the complex Israeli-Palestinian dispute, as portrayed by The New York Times.
