Priyanka Chopra Jonas Talks ‘Citadel’ Season 2, Swashbuckler Pic ‘The Bluff’ and New Projects From Purple Pebble Pictures

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has been fortunate enough to witness the evolution of global cinema, I must say that Priyanka Chopra Jonas is undeniably a force to be reckoned with. Her journey from conquering Bollywood to taking on Hollywood is nothing short of inspiring. Her ability to seamlessly transition between genres and languages while maintaining her unique charm is truly commendable.

After making a successful transition from Bollywood to Hollywood in the mid-2010s, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is now setting her sights on fresh endeavors. In October 2024, she brought on board Anne Carey, a seasoned producer, as the head of film and TV production for her company, Purple Pebble Pictures.

The actor is set to attend the Red Sea Film Festival for a special honor, scheduled for Dec. 12 during an award presentation. In a conversation with EbMaster, she discussed her future endeavors as both an actor and a producer, sharing insights about her upcoming projects.

She’s made a name for herself with her stellar performances in Bollywood movies like “Krrish”, “Fashion” and “Bajirao Mastani”. Interestingly, her debut significant role on the international stage was on the ABC thriller series “Quantico”. Beyond the screen, she has graced lists such as Time’s 100 Most Influential People and Forbes’ World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.

She stated that when she first entered the film industry in India, none of her relatives were involved in movie-making. However, by putting in effort, catching some breaks, and maybe even being guided by fate, she has managed to establish her professional path.

Lately, she’s wrapped up Season 2 of the espionage show “Citadel,” slated for release next year. In this series, she returns as Nadia Sinh, working alongside Richard Madden, Stanley Tucci, and Lesley Manville.

She clarified that the latest series holds significant advancements not only for her persona but also for the entire ensemble, introducing fresh characters. She described it as deeply rooted and solid.

In my appreciation for the show, I must share that Season 1 of “Citadel” featured a couple of episodes filmed abroad, and Season 2 took it up a notch by including two more shooting locations – one in Europe and another in the vibrant continent of Latin America.

Chopra Jonas explained, “We’ve previously presented the Indian series that served as an introduction to my character, and the Italian series that delved into the background of the antagonists. There hasn’t been a TV production on this grand scale before – one where local filmmakers and crew were assembled to shoot episodes in various global locations, all seamlessly connected. Our writers’ room comprised approximately 100 individuals, and collectively, we built upon the efforts of almost 400 people. Only Amazon MGM Studios had the capability to pull this off!

In 2015, Priyanka Chopra Jonas established Purple Pebble Pictures in bustling Mumbai, India. However, as her professional path transitioned from Bollywood to Hollywood, she relocated the company’s main office to the United States.

I’m passionate about nurturing budding filmmakers globally, serving as a bridge between diverse genres and offering a stage for fresh talent to break into the industry. My focus is especially on empowering female directors and screenwriters.

In October 2024, Anne Carey transferred to our company, having previously worked at Archer Gray where she was instrumental in creating “Nightbitch,” a film directed by Marielle Heller and featuring Amy Adams.

Purple Pebble Pictures, a production company, currently holds an initial glance agreement for movies and television programs with Amazon MGM Studios. Notably, they’ve recently produced two films that garnered Academy Award nominations: “The White Tiger” and “To Kill a Tiger.

Chopra Jonas commended Anne as an exceptional producer with a diverse portfolio of impressive projects. She expressed confidence that Anne could significantly aid us in our growth, mentioning that we possess a robust lineup of engaging projects which she is eager to collaborate on and further develop together.

Via her company, Chopra Jonas recently teamed up to produce and act in the Amazon MGM Studios’ action movie “The Bluff”, which was directed by Frank E. Flowers and co-written by him along with Joe Ballarini. The other producers for this project are AGBO (Joe and Anthony Russo) and Cinestar Pictures, while key actors include Karl Urban, Ismael Cruz Córdova, and Safia Oakley-Green.

In this series, Priyanka Chopra Jonas portrays a former pirate whose history comes back to haunt her. Instead of replicating “Pirates of the Caribbean,” we aimed to depict authentic 1700s pirate life. The character was inspired by historical figures like Grace O’Malley, an Irish pirate. We filmed the production in Australia, but it takes place in the Cayman Islands. These islands, situated between Honduras, Mexico, and Cuba, served as a stopover for pirates during their voyages. This diverse location attracted people from various parts of the world, such as Scotland, Africa, and India, which provided an excellent foundation for a multicultural and strong-willed cast.

In the action-comedy “Heads of State,” she will be appearing as an actor, with direction by Ilya Naishuller and production by The Safran Company for Amazon MGM Studios (expected to release in 2025). Her role is that of a bodyguard for the American president, portrayed by John Cena, and the British prime minister, played by Idris Elba. This movie was filmed across the U.K., France, Italy, and Serbia.

She shared that she’s the one responsible for performing the action sequences, which were both exciting and difficult to execute convincingly alongside actors like Idris and John. The overall feel of the project has a resemblance to ‘Lethal Weapon’.

As for the future, Chopra Jonas expresses her eagerness to take on fresh opportunities: “I’ve been fortunate enough in my Hindi films to work across numerous genres. In my English projects, I aspire to delve deeper and collaborate with directors who challenge me to try out new characters.
