Prime Video’s Underrated Sci-Fi Western Could’ve Been Westworld’s Replacement

Prime Video’s Outer Range had the potential to be a hit, filling the void left by Westworld, but unfortunately, the show was canceled after just two seasons. Even after the first season, it was evident that the show’s unique mix of science fiction and Western elements could have been something truly remarkable.

The critically praised sci-fi Western series, which debuted on Prime Video in 2022, stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbot, a Wyoming rancher. Abbot is caught in a feud with a competing ranching family, the Tillersons, but his problems take a strange turn when a puzzling black hole appears on his land, and a mysterious stranger shows up at his ranch.

Prime Video’s Outer Range Had The Potential To Be A Worthy Westworld Replacement

Imogen Poots plays Autumn, a mysterious traveler who becomes central to the unfolding story of Outer Range. Her arrival happens at the same time Royal’s daughter-in-law, Rebecca, goes missing, and soon Royal learns the meaning behind the strange, empty space on his land.

Everyone in the cast of Outer Range delivers a great performance, with Josh Brolin especially redeeming himself after his previous Western film, Jonah Hex. The show relies on these strong actors because it slowly reveals its secrets, keeping viewers guessing for a long time – much like a successful sci-fi Western that came before it.

In several respects, Outer Range feels like a natural successor to Westworld. Westworld, originally a Michael Crichton novel, was previously adapted for the screen, first as a 1973 film and then as an HBO series in 2016. The 2016 Westworld series, however, was a much more intricate and detailed take on the story than the original movie.

Why Outer Range Was Canceled After Two Seasons

Both Outer Range and Westworld took their time revealing their major plot twists, and both shows featured large casts and complicated stories that demanded viewers pay close attention. However, Westworld ran for four seasons (2016-2022), while Outer Range was canceled after just two seasons in 2024, probably because it was expensive to produce and didn’t attract enough viewers.

Why Westworld Season 5 Never Happened

Unlike Outer Range, Westworld quickly attracted a large audience. Its first episode had the highest viewership of any HBO series since the first season of True Detective in 2014.

Despite a strong start, viewership for the show declined dramatically over time, with the final season’s ratings down over 80% from the first episode. Therefore, canceling Westworld was a logical financial decision, just like the early ending of Outer Range, even though both cancellations were disappointing.
