Prime Video’s New Thor Could Have Never Been Played By Chris Hemsworth

A new Thor series is heading to Prime Video, but Chris Hemsworth won’t be reprising his role as the God of Thunder. This decision makes sense, especially considering Hemsworth and soon Tom Holland are tied for having starred in the most solo Marvel Cinematic Universe movies – currently four each.

Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, and is likely to continue playing the character in future Marvel projects. However, he won’t be starring in the new Thor series coming to Prime Video, which is based on a video game. It seems that, despite his experience with the role, his involvement in the series was never a possibility.

Chris Hemsworth Could Not Play Prime Video’s Thor For A Few Reasons

Production on Prime Video’s God of War series is underway, and casting has begun for important characters, including several Norse Gods. While Thor will appear in the show, Chris Hemsworth—who famously played Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade—will not reprise the role. Although it would have been possible for him to play a different version of the character, he won’t be involved in this adaptation.

While Chris Hemsworth has brilliantly played Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011, having him appear in the Prime Video God of War series would likely pull focus. The Marvel version of Thor is also much more lighthearted than the serious portrayal of the Norse God in God of War. With Marvel already planning a more dramatic take on Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, asking Hemsworth to play yet another different version of the character would feel repetitive.

The way Thor is portrayed in the God of War video games echoes a controversial moment from Chris Hemsworth’s time playing the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans heavily criticized “Fat Thor” in Avengers: Endgame, along with the movie’s generally lighter tone for the character. If the God of War series on Prime Video were to recreate that appearance, it would likely bring unwanted negative attention and discussion.

Prime Video’s God Of War Thor Casting Is Pitch-Perfect

Chris Hemsworth might not be done playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming Prime Video series based on God of War has cast Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, known from Severance, as the character of Thor. Although Ryan Hurst originally portrayed Thor in the game, he’s now playing the main character, Kratos, in the TV adaptation.

Ólafsson is a powerfully built actor who brings a unique and captivating presence to the screen, making this new take on Thor feel different from what audiences have seen before. As demonstrated in Severance, he excels at portraying a more intense and commanding Thor, immediately drawing viewers in and creating a sense of suspense. Prime Video made an excellent choice in casting him as the God of War.
