Prime Video’s Expensive Spy Thriller Show Gets Season 2 Update After A Series Of Spinoff Cancellations

season 2 finally gets an update.

As a big fan of spy thrillers, I was really excited when Citadel premiered on Amazon in 2023 – it was created by Josh Appelbaum, Bryan Oh, and David Weil, and the Russo brothers were involved as executive producers. We immediately got news about a second season, which was great, and they even started working on spin-offs in other countries. But things got a little confusing when those spin-offs were cancelled, and it made me wonder what’s going on with the main Citadel show itself.

Priyanka Chopra-Jonas recently told The Playlist that the second season of Citadel has already been filmed and is still planned for release. She also denied reports that the season underwent major reshoots to include storylines or characters from the cancelled spinoffs, Citadel: Diana and Citadel: Honey Bunny. Here’s what Chopra-Jonas had to say:

Honestly, it didn’t feel like a huge shift from season one – we just continued the story where we left off. But we’ve added some amazing new elements that I think everyone will love! And having Joe Russo direct most of it was fantastic – his experience really showed on set.

The first season of Citadel received mixed reactions from critics. While the show centers on the conflict between the Citadel spy agency and the Manticore terrorist group, many found it lacked originality. Currently, it has a score of just 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite mixed reviews, Citadel drew a large audience. However, with a reported budget of around $300 million for its first season of six episodes, it’s unclear if those numbers are enough for the show to be considered successful. Amazon clearly hoped Citadel would become a huge hit and launch a broader franchise.

So far, attempts to expand the show haven’t been very successful. While the Italian and Indian versions, titled Diana and Honey Bunny, received slightly better reviews than the original series, neither attracted a large enough audience to warrant a second season.

As a big fan of Citadel, I’m really looking forward to season 2, which is currently slated to drop this summer! From what I’ve heard, they finished filming back in November 2024, but it’s been a bit of a bumpy ride getting it made. Honestly, I’m a little worried about season 3 – there haven’t been any announcements, and it’s possible they might just quietly end the show or give us a shortened final season. I’m hoping for the best, especially since I love seeing Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci on screen!

Season 2 begins about a month after the events of the first season’s finale. Mason and Nadia are on the run from agents of Manticore and must team up to stop a powerful Brazilian billionaire, Paulo Braga.

It’s likely that if Citadel returns for another season, it will have a reduced budget. The show was created during a time when streaming services were investing heavily in new content, but those budgets are now being cut back, leaving the future of the Prime Video series uncertain.
