As a critic, I’ve been watching the numbers, and Amazon Prime’s latest is clearly connecting with audiences – despite what some of us are saying! It’s been a steady performer ever since Season 2 arrived, and honestly, if you’re a fan of gritty, action-packed shows like Reacher, this is the perfect thing to watch while we wait for its return. It’s become my go-to binge before Season 3 drops.
According to FlixPatrol, the series Cross is now third on the list of most popular shows on Prime Video. It’s currently beating out Fallout, which is in fourth place, but still has a ways to go to reach the top two shows, 56 Days and Beast Games.
The show currently ranks third in popularity both in the United States and worldwide, trailing only two other series. It reached number one in Germany and Austria on March 1st.
What Happens in Cross?
“Cross” is a television series created by Ben Watkins, and it’s the first TV show—and fourth adaptation overall—based on James Patterson’s popular Alex Cross novels featuring detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross.
The show features a talented cast including Isaiah Mustafa, Alona Tal, Juanita Jennings, Caleb Elijah, Melody Hurd, Jennifer Wigmore, and Samantha Walkes.
I have to say, “Cross” really hit the ground running when it premiered in 2024. Critics and viewers alike seemed to genuinely enjoy it. The show received a phenomenal 20 nominations for big industry awards, and it wasn’t just for show – it actually won Outstanding Drama Series and Ben Watkins took home the award for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series at the 56th NAACP Image Awards. A seriously impressive first season!
Currently, the first season of Cross has a 76% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning critics generally liked it. Viewers gave it a 64% score, as measured by the site’s “Popcornmeter.”
The film hasn’t been well-received by viewers, currently holding a 55% audience score. This is quite a contrast to Season 2 of Cross, which has earned a very high 96% rating from critics based on 17 reviews.
What Separates Cross Season 2 from Its Predecessor on Prime Video
The first season of Cross explored social justice themes alongside a story about a daring serial killer. Season 2 shifts gears, presenting a new type of antagonist altogether.
Watkins explained that they wanted to create a character who was both entertaining and thought-provoking. Specifically, they aimed to introduce a tough, vigilante character who audiences would still find themselves supporting.
We wanted the audience to really sympathize with the main character and feel she had a good reason to pursue those she was after, even if her actions eventually become questionable. The goal was to make viewers wonder where the line is between seeking justice and going too far. Watkins said early audience reactions have been very positive, suggesting they’ve successfully achieved this effect.
You can now watch Cross on Prime Video. New episodes of season two are released every Wednesday, with the final episode airing on March 18th.
