Originally airing on SyFy and then moving to Amazon Prime Video, The Expanse has become even more popular since it first premiered. Based on the novels by James S.A. Corey, the show ran for seven seasons with a total of 62 episodes, beginning in 2015 and concluding in 2022.
The series takes place in the future, after humans have colonized the entire solar system. It centers on a fragile peace between Earth and Luna’s United Nations and the Martian Congressional Republic. As the story unfolds, key figures – UN Security Council member Chrisjen, detective Josephus, and captain James Holden – uncover a vast and complex conspiracy.
When The Expanse first came out, critics loved its combination of suspenseful mystery and science fiction. However, the SyFy channel cancelled it after three seasons. Luckily, Amazon stepped in and continued the series, producing three more seasons from 2019 to 2022.
The Expanse Continues To Age Well
Even though The Expanse finished its run in 2022 with season 6, it’s still attracting new fans three years later. This isn’t surprising, as many consider it one of the greatest science fiction shows ever made, and a lot of people are just now discovering it.
The science fiction series The Expanse creates a believable future where humans have colonized the solar system. Through this detailed world, the show explores relevant issues like the problems with capitalism, the power of large corporations, the effects of colonization, and political corruption. The first season is particularly gritty and realistic, feeling similar to Blade Runner even though it’s set in space, much like Star Trek.
As the series progressed, The Expanse moved beyond its initial noir style. While the show started with a focus on Josephus and Chrisjen, it gradually expanded to include Holden, Naomi, Amos, and Alex, who became equally important to the main storyline.
Even years after it first aired, The Expanse feels remarkably relevant, blending insightful observations about today’s world with a compelling vision of the future. It’s a truly unique show, and continues to impress both new viewers and those revisiting it.
Today’s TV Landscape Has Made The Expanse Even Better
Fans of The Expanse will likely have a hard time finding other shows made with the same level of detail, grand scale, and compelling storytelling. When it was at its peak, The Expanse felt like a massive space adventure, similar to how Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead raised the bar for fantasy and horror on television.
We’re seeing a few shows like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead still, beyond their related series. However, television has evolved, and large-scale shows with many characters and detailed fictional worlds are becoming less common. These types of shows are expensive to make and require significant resources.
It’s amazing The Expanse even got made, which makes the show feel extra special. It launched at a perfect moment in television history, and since then, only a few other shows have achieved the same critical success with complex stories about politics and societal issues in futuristic settings.
Shows like Andor, Snowpiercer, Raised By Wolves, and Westworld didn’t run for as many seasons as The Expanse, mostly because they were expensive to produce. While Snowpiercer and Westworld each lasted four seasons before being canceled, the highly-rated Andor and Raised By Wolves were limited to just two seasons each.
It’s become rare for science fiction shows to last six seasons, especially when they require a lot of money to produce. While some new shows have big budgets and complex stories, they often don’t feel as complete or engaging as The Expanse simply because they aren’t on air long enough.
The Best Current Sci-Fi Shows For Fans Of The Expanse
While few sci-fi shows reach the level of The Expanse, Apple TV’s Silo is a strong contender, and in some ways, even surpasses it. Based on the Silo trilogy by author Hugh Howey, the series boasts a talented cast including Rashida Jones, Rebecca Ferguson, Common, and David Oyelowo.
Let me tell you about Silo. This show really grabbed me – it’s set in this massive, underground structure housing ten thousand people spread across 144 levels, and it’s a fantastic mix of science fiction, compelling drama, and a seriously twisty conspiracy. It’s the kind of show where you constantly question everything you see. I’ve been hooked for the two seasons that have aired so far, and the good news is, it’s already been renewed for both a third and fourth season, which is great news for fans like me!
In 2021, Apple TV brought Isaac Asimov’s classic Foundation novels to the screen as a TV series. The show, recently renewed for a fourth season, is similar to The Expanse in its intricate political storylines and large, compelling cast. Both series demonstrate the significant impact The Expanse has had on science fiction television.
