Prime Video Spoils Weapons’ Twist After Digital Release, Faces Huge Backlash

Criticism arose towards Amazon’s Prime Video when the sneak peek for the movie “Weapons” disclosed a significant plot twist prior to its digital release. Directed by Zach Cregger, this film has recently become available on various digital platforms after enjoying success at the box office. The spontaneous auto-play clip promptly stirred anger among horror enthusiasts online.

Prime Video’s Weapons preview spoils its key twist

Critics and horror enthusiasts have expressed dissatisfaction with Amazon’s Prime Video following previews of the movie “Weapons” revealing a significant plot twist prematurely. Released digitally on September 9, 2025, Cregger’s new creation blends dark humor and supernatural horror, garnering over $253 million globally against a budget of $38 million. Unhappy viewers noted that the Weapons page on Prime Video automatically played a scene exposing Gladys’ true identity.

The film starts with Alex’s parents self-inflicting fork wounds to their faces, a scene glimpsed in the teaser trailer. It then depicts Gladys casting her cursed staff into the water, causing Alex’s parents to halt their actions. This incident reveals Gladys as a witch. A key plot point is that Gladys feeds off children from Alex’s class to regain vitality, adding to the movie’s suspense.

Online, fans expressed their disappointment as they came across scenes on Amazon Prime that revealed the movie’s twist prematurely. A comment stated, “Purchased Weapons but the sneak peek scene spoils the movie’s surprise ending? Quite strange and disheartening for those who didn’t catch it in theaters.

Another person commented, ‘Regarding the ‘Out of Context’ defense, it seems as if our human brain struggles to connect the dots when we encounter characters or a setting from a movie, even in trailers. It appears that film trailer spoilers have spiraled out of proportion these days.’

Others drew parallels between this issue and other instances where the descriptions spoiled major plot twists. One viewer remarked, “I recall being taken aback when Longlegs debuted on Prime, as the synopsis revealed significant surprises. Oh my goodness, I just took a peek, why do they show that instead of a proper trailer?” Another observer noted, “HBO does the same thing in their Companion description by giving away the twist right at the start.

It was pointed out that certain clips seemed to be displayed in various areas, with one individual noting a difference between the teaser showing Josh Brolin requesting to view Ring Camera footage as opposed to the anticipated scene revealing witchcraft.
