A Pittsburgh priest was arrested for shoplifting $1,000 worth of sports cards from a Walmart. He reportedly hid the cards under his clothing.
Trading cards are more popular – and valuable – than ever, which has unfortunately led to a rise in thefts. Pokémon cards are a frequent target, with thieves regularly breaking into stores hoping to steal valuable packs and individual cards for profit.
Aidan Smith was arrested for stealing $1,000 worth of trading cards from a Walmart near Pittsburgh.
Reverend Smith, the dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Pittsburgh, has been accused of stealing merchandise and possessing stolen goods on five different occasions.
Top priest arrested over robbery
According to court documents obtained by the New York Post, the priest in charge was found with 27 packs of baseball cards hidden both under his clothes and in a box.
He was caught on camera stealing cards for four days before his arrest on February 27th.
In addition to a police investigation, Smith is also being investigated by the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.
Bishop Ketlen Solak of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh has asked for prayers for Aidan, Melanie, and their children during this challenging time. She also requested prayers for the entire cathedral community as they mourn, and for all those affected by this difficult news.
The newspaper reported that Smith has been on leave from their duties since January, but the church hasn’t shared the reason why.
So, it looks like another big Pokemon card heist just happened, and honestly, it’s getting kinda scary how often these are happening. Remember back in February? Some thieves actually tunneled into a card shop in Anaheim and made off with around $180,000 worth of cards! It’s wild.
Recently, a New York card shop co-owned by NFL star Tom Brady was hit by thieves who stole $10,000 worth of Pokemon cards.
