President Trump Says He Will Fire Kennedy Center Board Members and Name Himself Chairman

President Trump has expressed his plan to assume control over the management of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which is located in Washington, D.C.

Following the initial report by The Atlantic, Trump announced his intentions through a post on Truth Social on Friday evening. In the post, he wrote: “I am directing efforts to make the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. great once more. Immediately, I am terminating several members from the Board of Trustees, including the Chairman, who do not align with our vision for a new Golden Age in arts and culture.

Trump announced that he plans to take on the role as head of the recently established board, saying, “We’ll soon reveal a new Board, led by an exceptional Chairman – Donald J. Trump!” Originally, David Rubenstein was scheduled to serve as chairman until 2026.

Trump criticized a drag performance at the performing arts center, saying “Last year, the Kennedy Center hosted drag shows aimed at our young audience members – this will change. The Kennedy Center is an American treasure, and it should showcase the finest talent from all over the country on its stage. The future holds great things for the Kennedy Center!

2024 saw a variety of drag shows gracing the stages of Kennedy Center. These included “Broadway Drag Brunch” and “Dancing Queens Drag Brunch” held on the Roof Terrace Restaurant, a tribute to divas called “A Drag Salute to Divas” on the South Millennium Stage, “Bertha: Grateful Drag” in the Terrace Theater, and “Dixie’s Tupperware Party” in the Family Theater.

It remains uncertain at this point whether Trump’s proposal falls within his powers. Representatives from Rubenstein, a key figure as co-founder and co-chairman of the private equity behemoth Carlyle, have yet to respond to our inquiry.
