The Predator series has given us several great sci-fi action movies since 1987. But next week’s release, Predator: Badlands, promises to be different. Director Dan Trachtenberg, known for Prey, is shifting the focus to the Predator itself. The film has already been shown to audiences, so what are people saying about this new approach?
In Predator: Badlands, Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi plays Dek, a young Predator who’s been exiled from his people. He teams up with Thia, played by Elle Fanning, and together they embark on an adventure. Eammon Parks Jacobs from Dexerto really enjoyed the film, describing it as an action movie with a fun, buddy-comedy feel, like a road trip story. He shared his thoughts online, saying:
Predator: Badlands is a fun, action-packed road movie with a cosmic twist. Director Dan Trachtenberg expands the Predator universe beyond a simple fight for survival, and while it’s not overly graphic, it’s a really enjoyable ride.
The “Brothers Geek Out” podcast really enjoyed the action in this movie and suggests seeing it in theaters. They said:
I just saw Predator: Badlands, and it’s an incredible action movie! It’s a surprisingly emotional story about a Predator searching for a place to belong, and features some of the best fight choreography I’ve seen in a long time. Definitely worth seeing in theaters! 🔥
Predator: Badlands is the first film in the Predator series to receive a PG-13 rating, and this has Naomi Roper from The Geek Goddesses wondering who the filmmakers are trying to reach with this change. She asks:
Dan Trachtenberg took a real risk with this new Predator film, aiming it at a younger audience. While I really liked it, I’m not sure who the target demographic is – it feels very geared towards Disney and selling related products. It’s surprisingly charming, and Elle Fanning delivers a fantastic performance, as always.
Many viewers are noticing the director’s bold choices in the film. Similar to the previous critic, Neil Vagg from Get Your Comic On says he enjoyed the movie, even though it wasn’t as scary as other horror releases planned for 2025 or previous films in the series. He shared his thoughts in a post saying:
Dan Trachtenberg’s new Predator film, Badlands, is a bold departure for the series, shifting away from horror and embracing a more traditional science fiction adventure. It’s a large-scale, exciting movie designed to appeal to a wide audience. While longtime fans might need to adjust, it offers plenty to enjoy for viewers open to this fresh take.
I’ve been following the news about this new release, and Phil Roberts over at Future of the Force thinks some fans might be surprised by how different it is from what they’re used to. But he still calls it a really amazing and grand experience – a true spectacle! He had more to say, and I’m eager to hear it.
Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands is a visually impressive story that explores the history of the Yautja. While it’s more of a large-scale science fiction adventure than a typical Predator movie, its ambitious ideas don’t always fully succeed. Longtime fans of the series might find it doesn’t quite deliver what they expect.
In a recent post on X, Paul Klein from Film Hounds predicted the movie will likely split audiences, but he praised the filmmakers for taking risks and avoiding the usual predictable approach to the franchise. He added:
I admire Dan Tratchenberg’s willingness to explore ‘Predator: Badlands.’ While it doesn’t entirely succeed and may not appeal to everyone, it’s good to see the franchise taking risks instead of sticking to the same old formula. The music and creature designs are particularly strong.
Movie critic Josh Barton had a mixed reaction to Predator: Badlands. He described it as the worst film in the Predator series, but still an exciting and action-packed watch. He then went on to share his detailed review:
Predator: Badlands is a thrilling addition to the Predator series, though it might be director Dan Trachtenberg’s least strong film in the franchise so far. It’s definitely the most action-filled Predator movie yet, with moments of intense brutality balanced by surprising comedic elements. This mix is an interesting choice for a Predator film, though it doesn’t always quite hit the mark, sometimes feeling similar to The Mandalorian. But when it works, it’s genuinely great.
Okay, so director changes were definitely made to this film, and that’s clear. But honestly, if you go in ready to just enjoy the movie, I think you’re going to have a really good time. I’m saying, leave your expectations at the door and prepare to be entertained!
Okay, seriously, Predator: Badlands completely blew me away! The world they built is just gorgeous, and the whole movie is so smart, fun, and just plain cool. It’s definitely different from what we’ve seen before with Predator, but honestly, after years of the franchise stumbling, that’s a good thing. Just go in expecting something new – we’re not getting a traditional ‘Predator’ movie, and that’s okay! It feels really fresh and bold, and I’m really hoping it’s a huge success.
Early viewers of Predator: Badlands have mixed reactions – some worry that longtime fans might not love director Dan Trachtenberg’s take on the franchise, but overall, they’ve said good things about the movie. We’ll all be able to see it soon, as it comes out in theaters next Friday, November 7th.
