Pragmata Team Explains Why This Perfect-For-Co-Op Game Doesn’t Have Co-Op

From the moment I saw the first trailer for Pragmata, I felt it was ideally suited for a two-player cooperative game, even though it’s designed as a single-player experience.

The game stands out because it features two main characters, Hugh and Diana, who work incredibly well together in battle. They rely on each other’s unique abilities to overcome challenges and stay alive.

It turns out I wasn’t far off with that idea! Capcom recently shared that they initially thought about making a co-op game, but ultimately decided against it.

Capcom Aims for a New Kind of Gameplay With Pragmata

In a recent interview with AUTOMATON Japan, producer Naoto Oyama discussed how Hugh and Diana play very differently. Hugh, being a child, can hack enemies while also dealing damage directly. The game uniquely allows you to control both characters simultaneously, which sounds quite interesting.

I get what the developers were aiming for – they felt that if they’d split up the characters’ unique ways of playing, it would have really weakened what made them special and how well they complement each other. Basically, it wouldn’t have been the experience they wanted to create, and I totally understand that!

Oyama explains that while they thought about a cooperative mode, their main focus for Pragmata was creating a unique gameplay experience. They decided to emphasize the challenge and enjoyment of a single player handling both action and puzzles at the same time, which ultimately shaped the game into what it is today.

The game focuses on teamwork between Hugh and Diana, not just fighting. They’ll need to rely on each other to get around – for instance, Diana can use her hacking skills to create a route that Hugh can then navigate with his thrusters or hover ability. If players get lost in large areas, Diana can scan and mark the correct path. This partnership is essential to progress.

The game sounds really interesting, and I’m excited to try it, but unfortunately, we’ll all have to wait until 2026 to play Pragmata on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
