An influencer is receiving widespread backlash for giving out large machetes, cigarettes, and alcohol to people experiencing homelessness. Police have not yet commented as videos of the incident circulate online.
Keith Castillo, who goes by the name ‘povwolfy,’ created a Thanksgiving video that became incredibly popular, earning over 18 million views on TikTok and Instagram.
A 29-year-old man is giving away machetes and alcohol to people experiencing homelessness. He purchased the machetes in bulk for less than $5 each and is recording the interactions, where some recipients are even asking for more blades.
He claims this act is about protecting people experiencing homelessness, but most viewers strongly criticized it as dangerous. One person on Instagram argued that it actually puts vulnerable individuals at risk, rather than keeping them safe.
Influencer plots more dangerous content after machete stunt sparks backlash
Castillo explained to the New York Post that he’s been traveling between cities since October, filming himself giving away items and then leaving to avoid negative reactions. He also mentioned he always keeps about 30 machetes in his car and is planning to continue these giveaways in Las Vegas, Los Angeles’ Skid Row, and New York City in January.
He mentioned he currently has around 30 machetes in his car, saying they were inexpensive. He also plans to give away small, one-ounce bottles of cinnamon whiskey that’s 66-proof.
When questioned about offering alcohol to individuals potentially battling addiction, Castillo dismissed the concerns, stating the promotion’s high engagement justified his actions. He bluntly explained, “I don’t really care, it gets people clicking and watching. We have to do what’s necessary to succeed.”
He stated he checked with police before giving out the weapons and was assured he wasn’t doing anything illegal. However, the police departments in Austin, Little Rock, and New Orleans haven’t made any public statements about these events. The New York Police Department also wouldn’t comment on his planned trip to New York.
Law enforcement professionals are critical of the incident. Joseph Giacalone, a former NYPD sergeant and professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, described it as a dangerous mistake. He explained that while owning a machete is generally legal, combining weapons with alcohol creates a potentially serious and harmful situation.
Honestly, when I heard about alcohol and machetes being involved, I just thought, ‘Seriously?’ It seemed like a recipe for something terrible, and I couldn’t believe anyone would even consider it. It just felt incredibly reckless and, frankly, a little unbelievable.
Across the nation, police are increasingly taking action against social media influencers when their activities cross the line into illegal behavior.
Jack Dohery, a streamer, could face up to seven years in prison. He’s accused of blocking traffic while filming videos and fighting with police when they tried to stop him. Police also say they found an illegal drug on him at the time.
So, this TikTok guy, Heston James, got into some serious trouble earlier this year. He was doing a bunch of pranks in Arizona, and things escalated to the point where he’s now facing felony charges. Apparently, if he’s convicted, he could be looking at up to nine years in prison – talk about a prank gone wrong!
A DoorDash driver in New York was arrested and faces a serious felony charge after a video he took of a customer’s exposed state on their couch went viral in early November.
