Unfortunately, Monopoly rules don’t apply to real life, but this driver sure wished they did.
A video of a traffic stop in Fullerton, California is quickly spreading online. Police pulled over a driver in early November 2025 for a traffic violation, though the specific reason for the stop isn’t clear.
When the officer approached the car, they were surprised to find the driver didn’t just offer a license and registration. Instead, they also handed over a “Get Out of Jail Free” card from the board game Monopoly.

If you’re not familiar with the board game Monopoly, this card lets a player avoid losing a turn while in jail and keep playing. It’s become so well-known that “get out of jail free” is a common saying in the US, used to describe someone trying to avoid the consequences of their own actions.
The driver tried to make a stressful situation a little lighter with humor, but they still received a ticket. What they didn’t expect was for the incident to become a viral sensation.
On November 5th, the Fullerton Police Department shared a photo on Instagram that quickly gained over 8,000 likes and many humorous comments.
“You never know what’s going to happen on a traffic stop,” they captioned the post.
An officer recently stopped a driver for a traffic violation. In an attempt to avoid a ticket, the driver jokingly offered a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card from the board game Monopoly.
The officer chuckled at the driver’s attempt to explain himself, pointing out that while it was clever, it wasn’t a valid excuse in the eyes of the law. He suggested the driver keep the explanation for a better time, then issued a genuine ticket. The driver left with a smile, despite receiving the citation.

To make matters worse, the department added a series of jokingly sarcastic hashtags to their post, like ‘#communitychestdeclined,’ ‘#donotcollect200,’ and ‘#donotpassgo.’
I was cracking up at the whole conversation! Someone commented that they wished someone had played an Uno Reverse card, and honestly, that’s perfect. It would have been the ultimate comeback!
“Technically, they didn’t go to jail, so it worked,” another remarked.
“At least give him a warning for that!” another pleaded.
