I just heard about this police training course and it’s wild! Apparently, they’re actually getting volunteers intoxicated – like, first thing in the morning – so new recruits can practice dealing with drunk people. It’s definitely getting a lot of attention online!
Denver news reporter Mark Salinger shared on Instagram on October 21st that Colorado State Police are looking for volunteers willing to drink alcohol. The purpose is to help train new officers to identify signs of drunk driving.
Sallinger explained that this facility, known as a ‘wet lab,’ trains future officers to identify impaired drivers. The training involves volunteers who consume alcohol under controlled conditions, all carefully managed as a scientific process.
He explained that one officer even jokes about calculating how many drinks someone would need to reach the legal limit for drunk driving. However, these individuals aren’t actually driving; they’re simply participating in practice sobriety tests, like the walk-and-turn and alphabet recitation.

Police tested drunk volunteers for drink driving training
As expected, none of the participants could successfully complete the field sobriety tests, and they all would have been arrested if this were a real-life scenario.
Once Sallinger shared the video, many Instagram users expressed interest in participating in future practice sessions. One person jokingly mentioned their employer offers a volunteer day, while another simply asked where they could sign up to help.
One person jokingly said they’d welcome AI taking their job. Another playfully responded as if directing someone to get another drink and addressing an officer.
This isn’t the first time a police department’s call for volunteer testers has become popular online. Recently, the Ocean City Police Department in Maryland received an overwhelming response from people wanting to help them identify weeds.
Police reported receiving a huge number of sign-ups in just over four hours.
