Poker Face Is Over As We Know It

Fans of Poker Face might be disappointed, but there’s still hope! Peacock has canceled the show after two seasons, meaning Natasha Lyonne’s character, Charlie Cale, is currently without a case. However, according to Variety, the show’s creators are looking for a new home for it. There’s a big change coming: Peter Dinklage will take over as Charlie Cale, and the plan is to feature a different lead actor every two seasons.

I really like this idea. We definitely need some fresh, lasting content – on TV and beyond – and this feels like a great chance to create it. Peter Dinklage is a perfect fit, as he already showed his talent for this kind of role earlier this year with a fantastic appearance on The Lowdown. He played an old friend of Ethan Hawke’s character who unexpectedly shows up, outshines him, and actually does a better job solving the case.

The show’s future format is still up for debate. Should Charlie Cale’s character change with each season, similar to the way the Doctor regenerates in Doctor Who, with a story explanation for the change? Probably not. Could it work more like James Bond, where the show essentially restarts with a new take on the character every cycle? Or would it be best to simply recast the role without making a big story out of it – the same character, the same backstory, just a new actor, and move on?

If Poker Face gets renewed, it would be great to see some connection to Natasha Lyonne’s original character, Charlie Cale. Perhaps all future versions of the character could share a distinctive trait like Lyonne’s signature red curly hair (even if it means Peter Dinklage wearing a wig!). Or maybe they could all adopt her raspy New York accent (Dinklage could really lean into that!). They should have fun with it! It’s a shame Lyonne won’t be involved if the show continues, but she’s busy with her new AI company, so that’s understandable.
