As a dedicated player of Pokemon TCG Pocket, I find myself deeply disheartened by the recent Mythical Island expansion. The lack of new Metal-type cards is simply unacceptable, especially when considering that they are already the second-lowest number of cards in Genetic Apex. It’s as if the developers have forgotten about us Steel enthusiasts!

The expansion of Pokémon TCG Pocket’s Mythical Island introduced more than 80 fresh cards to the popular mobile game for enthusiasts to gather, yet one significant absence has not been overlooked.

Although Mythical Island has fewer Metal-type cards than only Dragon-types and no additional Metal-type cards were introduced, at least it added a new card for Druggidon.

For now, until a significant game update around 2025, known as the next major expansion, there are only five characters from Metal type, referred to as Steel in other Pokemon media – Mawile, Pawniard, Bisharp, Meltan, and Melmetal.

Consequently, beyond limiting options for those constructing mono-type decks, these choices aren’t exceptionally powerful in competitive play.

Without fresh additions to stir things up, Psychic-type Pokémon, who are weak against Metal in the Trading Card Game (TCG), will likely persist in their dominance, as the underutilized weakness to Metal remains scarcely portrayed.

Metal shortage

It’s not surprising that Metal-type Pokémon being overlooked led to many players criticizing their rarity, as seen by a widely popular thread on the game’s specific subreddit poking fun at their ignored state.

It’s troubling, indeed, when you think about it because not only is the Florges line ruthless yet vulnerable, but it’s weak against an element rarely used in combat. This could make it a dominant force in Psychic decks for some time, and that might pose a challenge since there seems to be a lack of competitive-level Metal decks.

People quickly pointed out that leaving out certain elements made completing certain challenging missions (which often involve gathering specific amounts of identical cards) more complex. They suggested these tasks should not be part of premium quests at all.

Since the Mythical Island lacks any Metal-type Pokémon, players must resort to using Genetic Apex boosters to finish any related missions instead.

“I’m feeling irritated because I want to open all my packs to get the Mythical Island, but I also need to draw about four more Metal-type cards for my final mission with my premium subscription.

The creators of the Pokemon TCG Pocket haven’t provided a specific date for the upcoming major set release, but it is expected to come out in 2025. In the meantime, it seems that Psychic-type cards will continue to be powerful choices in PvP matches.
