It’s been just over a year since The Pokémon Company released its mobile game, Pokémon TCG Pocket. Now, thanks to data from PocketGamer.biz, we have a good understanding of how well the game has done. Pokémon GO was a massive hit when it launched in 2016, but Pokémon TCG Pocket has actually generated even more revenue for the Pokémon franchise. While Pokémon GO earned $1 billion in its first year, Pokémon TCG Pocket brought in almost $1.3 billion.
Digital trading card game Pokémon TCG Pocket reportedly earns $1.3 billion in its first year
It’s a bit surprising, but when you consider the context, it makes sense. It used to be obvious how popular Pokémon GO was – you could see groups of people rushing to catch Pokémon. Similarly, Pokémon TCG Pocket launched at the peak of the Pokémon trading card craze. Everywhere you looked online, especially on Reddit, people were sharing stories about empty shelves where Pokémon cards should have been. Pokémon TCG Pocket filled a need, offering a convenient way to enjoy Pokémon cards when physical cards were hard to find.
Recently, TCG Pocket released a new set of cards featuring Pokémon that have Mega Evolved, shortly after these Pokémon reappeared in the Pokémon Legends: Z-A video game, which has been very successful for Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Fans may have noticed a significant wait between major Pokémon game releases. By the time Legends: Z-A came out, Scarlet and Violet were almost three years old. While there were some smaller expansions, TCG Pocket was the biggest Pokémon release in almost a year. It likely attracted a large portion of the Pokémon fanbase simply because there weren’t many other new options available at the time.
A key factor in TCG Pocket’s success is likely its subscription service. The game doesn’t require spending money – players can buy items for special events or packs individually. However, they also have the option of a monthly subscription that gives them one extra pack to open each day. Unlike Pokémon GO, which relied on one-time purchases, this consistent subscription income likely contributed to TCG Pocket’s strong financial performance in its first year.
The Mega Rising booster pack brought Mega Evolution to TCG Pocket, and the game continues to thrive as its 14th booster release. With Pokémon GO celebrating its 10th anniversary next year, Pokémon TCG Pocket could very well be around for another ten years if things continue as they are. But next year isn’t just about Pokémon GO! It also marks the 30th anniversary of the original Pokémon games, which first launched in 1996. The Pokémon Company is planning a huge celebration to mark both milestones.
