Pokémon Pokopia: Every New Pokémon Form, Ranked

For many years, Game Freak has consistently added new ways for Pokémon to evolve and change in each new game. These changes range from traditional permanent evolutions to temporary transformations like Mega Evolutions and unique regional variations.

In Pokémon Pokopia, Game Freak and Omega Force are debuting unique alternate forms of Pokémon. These Pokémon have adapted in diverse ways to survive in the harsh Withered Wasteland and the surrounding islands.

Although Pokopia doesn’t introduce a huge number of new Pokémon, the ones it does add are all well-designed with interesting backstories and helpful abilities, making them welcome additions to the Pokémon universe.

8. Smearguru

Pokémon’s Very Own Picasso

One of the first new Pokémon revealed in the trailers for Pokopia was Smearguru, a Smeargle that truly embodies its ability to Sketch and its Pokédex descriptions by becoming a fully independent artist.

Smearguru, found in Bleak Beach, dreams of painting the scenery of its hometown. For now, it will help players change the colors of their items and furniture.

Smearguru is a pleasant addition, but its special ability isn’t very practical for most players. It’s hard to imagine it being included in the main Pokémon games, as it would likely function similarly to the Pokémon Smeargle, perhaps with a slightly different ability.

7. Chef Dente

A Proper Successor to Brock

Just before the release of Pokémon Pokopia, trailers revealed Chef Dente, a unique Greedent Pokémon. She’s taken her passion for food to the extreme, becoming a talented chef who could impress even Brock, the famously food-loving Gym Leader.

Chef Dente, who grew up in Rocky Ridges surrounded by a family passionate about food, discovered her love for cooking at a young age. Known as Charlotte, she has a habit of generously seasoning her dishes and a rather unusual way of storing her kitchen tools – in her tail, rather than collecting berries!

Chef Dente is a friendly and approachable character that players will quickly enjoy. She’s a great teacher, helping with Pokémon preservation, but like Smearguru, she probably wouldn’t fit into the main Pokémon games unless Game Freak gave her a unique Normal/Steel typing.

6. Mosslax

The Most Sleepy Snorlax of All Time

The moment Mosslax—a Snorlax covered in moss and flowers—appeared in a trailer for Pokopia, fans loved it. Its unique design felt like a perfect fit for the Pokémon.

Mosslax is a Pokémon found in Bleak Beach with a unique story. Legend says it fell asleep trying to recover from a Pokémon battle loss, and slept for so long that moss and flowers completely covered its body, causing it to forget much of its past.

Mosslax, found in Pokopia, mainly functions as a roadblock, much like previous Snorlax. However, it has potential as a playable battle form in future Pokémon games. It could be a Normal/Grass-type Pokémon with an ability similar to Regigigas’ Slow Start, giving it a unique strategic role.

5. Tinkmaster

A Pokémon Every Tinkaton Would Envy

Tinkmaster, a Tinkaton who wields a hammer similar to a Swiss Army knife, was a surprise addition to Pokopia. Unlike other new Pokémon, she wasn’t shown in any trailers or promotional materials before the game’s release, but she quickly became a fan favorite NPC.

Deep within the shimmering Sparking Skylands lives Tinkmaster, a Tinkaton known for its exceptional craftsmanship. Unlike most of its kind, Tinkmaster is incredibly dexterous and can expertly use various tools to modify and improve its signature hammer, inspired by the structures and machines created by humans.

Tinkmaster looks similar to other Tinkaton, but it’s a really helpful character in Pokopia. It allows players to create advanced structures and machines, like generators and lifts for building.

4. Peakychu

The Most Unexpected Pikachu Variant

With each new generation of Pokémon, many similar Pokémon have appeared, like the electric squirrel Pachirisu and the mischievous Mimikyu. However, Peakychu from Pokopia remains a surprisingly different take on the iconic mascot Pikachu.

Peakychu is a rare, very pale Pikachu found on Bleak Beach. Legend says it used up all its electric power to help heal its friends, and now it can’t generate electricity anymore.

Okay, so Peakychu can still power stuff up if other Electric Pokémon lend a hand, which is cool. But honestly, I’m really hoping they bring Peakychu into the main Pokémon games as a Ghost/Electric type. The lore says it became a ghost after giving away most of its energy, and that would be amazing to see in action!

3. DJ Rotom

K.K. Slider’s Biggest Rival

One of the newly revealed Pokémon from the Pokopia trailers is DJ Rotom. Like other Rotom, it possesses an appliance – in this case, a small stereo system. Rotom are known for inhabiting things like microwaves, washing machines, fans, refrigerators, lawn mowers, and even Pokédexes.

DJ Rotom lives in the Rocky Ridges, close to Chef Dente. Legend has it that he developed a love for music after finding a synth-pop CD inside a stereo he possessed.

Okay, so in the game, you can give DJ Rotom CDs with music from older Pokémon games – it’s a really cool nod to the series’ history and makes Pokopia feel connected to everything else. But honestly, it got me thinking… DJ Rotom’s whole thing with music makes it seem like Game Freak might actually be planning a Sound-type Pokémon someday! Even though right now, Rotom is an Electric/Normal type, this feels like a hint they’re testing the waters.

2. Professor Tangrowth

Pokémon’s Most Helpful Professor

Pokémon games almost always feature Professors, but lately they haven’t played a big role in helping players or moving the story forward. Professor Tangrowth is different – he’s one of the most involved and helpful Professors in the entire series.

Professor Tangrowth plays a major role in Pokopia, almost like a co-star. He’s with the player throughout the game, consistently offering help, communicating with Pokémon, and providing guidance on restoring the Withered Wasteland and rebuilding communities.

Professor Tangrowth isn’t quite the academic that Professors Oak, Rowan, or Birch are, but he’s known for being positive, empathetic, and treating every Pokémon in Pokopia with kindness.

1. Trainer Ditto

The Ultimate Ditto

Lastly, Pokopia introduces a unique form: the player character, reimagined as a Ditto. This Ditto transforms to resemble the player’s old Pokémon Trainer, appearing years after their unexplained disappearance.

Unlike most Ditto, which can only transform into one Pokémon at a time, the player’s Ditto is special. It can use a variety of moves – like Water Gun, Cut, and Rock Smash – while still looking like a human.

In a life simulation survival game, the Pokémon Ditto proved to be an ideal player character, and could become one of the most memorable gaming protagonists ever – even though it isn’t a human character.
