Today, The Pokémon Company has unveiled a brand new form of Mega Evolution for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, expanding on the mysterious previews released last week. The video offers insights into each clip’s background, explaining that they were all influenced by a Pokémon’s mesmerizing psychic abilities. Ultimately, the video’s conclusion showcases Malamar’s new Mega Evolution, which seems to amplify its existing capabilities. This marks the second sixth-generation Pokémon to be granted a Mega Evolution, following Mega Hawlucha’s reveal. In addition, Malamar becomes the fourth Pokémon in Legends: Z-A to receive a new Mega Evolution, joining Mega Dragonite and Mega Victreebel.
Mega Malamar revealed as the next Mega Evolution for Pokémon Legends: Z-A
In the captivating world of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the emergence of Mega Malamar extends an exhilarating pattern that began with Mega Evolution, which debuted in the Pokémon X & Y games, part of the sixth generation. However, back then, none of the new Pokémon from the Kalos region in X & Y received a Mega Evolution. Now, we’re back in Lumiose City, Kalos’ hometown, and for the first time, the native Pokémon are getting their moment in the limelight. Hawlucha was the initial one, but Malamar follows suit, suggesting that more Pokémon originally introduced in Pokémon X & Y might undergo Mega Evolution in the future.
Another intriguing option is Malamar. It’s particularly renowned for its distinctive evolution technique among all the games. When Inkay reaches a specific level, you need to physically turn your console upside down during the leveling process for it to evolve, a method that remains consistent even in the newer games. I recall those days on the 3DS when Inkay and Malamar were fresh, and this peculiar method was still in use back then.
Beyond the unusual story about Malamar’s hypnosis dominating Lumiose City, which has grabbed everyone’s attention, The Pokémon Company unveiled another trailer concentrating on actual gameplay footage of Mega Malamar. As a dual Psychic and Dark-type Pokémon, Malamar is an exceptionally formidable creature. With its psychic abilities, it’s already a force to be reckoned with. However, its Dark typing, or as they call it in Japan, “Evil,” adds an ominous edge to its character, making it even more dangerous, as both trailers show.
At the moment, we’re lacking more specific information regarding these new Mega Evolutions. The Pokémon Company hasn’t disclosed any modifications to their stats or other aspects yet. Interestingly, it seems that in the game Legends: Z-A, the Pokémon Malamar might be doing away with its special ability, Contrary, which was a key factor that distinguished its base form. This ability swapped stat drops for stat increases, and vice versa. It will be intriguing to observe how Mega Malamar functions in Legends: Z-A without relying on this unique trait.
