Pokemon Legends: Z-A Legendaries Guide – How to catch Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde

Finished Pokémon Legends: Z-A and wondering how to catch the legendary Kalos Pokémon? You might have noticed you didn’t get a chance to catch Zygarde during the final battle, but don’t worry, it’s still possible! It takes a little extra effort, but it’s not too difficult. First, complete one Reward Match in the postgame’s Infinite Z-A Royale. After finishing your first match, you’ll receive a message directing you back to Hotel Z. There, L will advise you to investigate Xerneas and Yveltal – referred to as “the one who gives” and “the one who takes.” Talk to Mable and Grisham to learn more about these two legendary Pokémon.

How to catch Xerneas

Mable at the Pokemon Research Lab will tell you about strange occurrences in Wild Zones 3, 5, and 9. Powerful Alpha Pokemon have been appearing there, and she believes they might be connected to Xerneas. To have a chance at catching Xerneas, you’ll first need to deal with these Alpha Pokemon. Here’s a list of the ones she’s concerned about:

  • Alpha Steelix, in Wild Zone 3
  • Alpha Gallade, in Wild Zone 5
  • Alpha Pangoro, in Wild Zone 9

Okay, so all three of those Alpha Pokémon are level 70 – that’s way higher than where I was at the end of the game! If your team is a little underpowered, you might want to do a bit of grinding before taking them on. Once you’ve beaten all three, go back to Mable and she’ll tell you Xerneas is showing up in Wild Zone 11. Just follow the marker for the main mission, ‘The One Who Gives,’ and you’ll find Xerneas ready for a battle!

How to catch Yveltal

To find Yveltal, talk to Grisham. He’ll ask you to train at Quasartico by battling simulations of Mega Evolutions you’ve already faced. You’ll need to defeat Mega Victreebel, Mega Hawlucha, and Mega Tyranitar – all now at Level 70 – and this time you’ll have to do it alone. If you’re not at a high enough level, it’s a good idea to train your Pokémon before attempting these battles.

After completing the simulations, you’ll receive a notification that Yveltal has appeared in Lumiose City. Go to the roof of Galerie de la Lune in the Rouge District to find and battle Yveltal, then catch it – the process is similar to how you caught Xerneas.

How to catch Zygarde

After defeating Xerneas and Yveltal, go back to Hotel Z to let them know you succeeded. Then, L will challenge you to a Pokémon battle. Be warned – he’s the most difficult trainer in the game! It’s best to have your Pokémon around level 80 on average before you fight him, unless you’re very confident in your strategy. Once you win outside the hotel, L will tell you where to find Zygarde: in Wild Zone 20. Go there to face the game’s final challenge.

The battle against Zygarde happens in three stages, similar to a Mega Evolution fight, where you face it in its 10%, 50%, and then Complete forms. With each stage, Zygarde gets stronger and more aggressive, so using a powerful Fairy-type Pokémon like Mega Gardevoir is a good strategy. If you started with Chikorita, now’s the perfect time to use Meganium! After defeating Zygarde Complete, you can catch it with any Poké Ball you choose.
