Pokemon Fan Finds Rare Misprinted Game That May Be Worth Thousands

Back in 1998, Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue, the initial games of the beloved franchise, arrived in America. Fast-forward to today, after many years since these games hit the shelves, a devoted fan stumbled upon an unopened copy of Pokemon Blue hidden away in their closet, which could potentially fetch thousands of dollars due to its rarity.

Reddit user Sausagenpeppers recently posted a picture of an undamaged Pokemon Blue cartridge (apparently obtained from Automaton) that retains a price sticker from K-B Toys.

Discovering something like this would have been thrilling in itself, but when Sausagenpeppers posted a photo of the other side of the box, it became clear that this was an unusual mistake – a Pokemon Blue cartridge with Pokemon Red’s text printed on its back cover.

Errors such as this one are often coveted by enthusiasts within the Pokémon community, and if Sausagenpeppers decides to sell this game, it could potentially fetch a high price, possibly even reaching thousands of dollars. Passionate fans of Pokémon have demonstrated a readiness to pay substantial amounts of money, not just for official merchandise, but also for unofficial items like the Charizard-Shaped Cheeto, nicknamed Cheetozard, which was sold for $72,000 earlier this year. In fact, last May, a man in the UK was arrested for possessing Pokémon cards estimated to be worth over $300,000. Reports also suggest that some organized crime groups have used certain Pokémon cards for money laundering purposes.

The main franchise continues to gain momentum with no signs of waning. In November, there’s an upcoming expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, and the next installment in the series, titled Pokémon Legends: Z-A, is set for release on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on October 16th. Meanwhile, Pokémon Go has started a Tales of Transformation season, while Scopely has announced the events scheduled for September.
