Pluribus fans concerned after new ad tells Carol “everyone’s watching”

Apple TV is celebrating the success of its hit show, Pluribus, with a new ad. However, some viewers are worried after a recent incident involving a ‘smart’ refrigerator that went viral.

With Vince Gilligan (creator of Breaking Bad) leading the way, a fantastic cast, a captivating science fiction story set in a troubled future, and beautiful visuals, Pluribus is easily one of the top TV shows of 2025.

The show’s marketing campaign perfectly matches its unsettling and mysterious vibe. It includes clever, self-aware jokes that feel like they’re from the show itself – like a real phone number that connects you to a strange, collective experience.

Apple TV announced that “Pluribus” has become its most popular show of all time, surpassing previous hits like “Severance” and “Ted Lasso,” following the premiere of its seventh episode.

Pluribus ad tells Carol “everyone’s watching”

Fans of the show Pluribus have noticed new billboards popping up with the message, “Everyone’s watching, Carol.” Like previous promotional material, this one is cleverly written as if the show’s mysterious collective intelligence is speaking directly to the character Carol, played by Rhea Seehorn.

Some viewers are worried the ad might be scary for people who haven’t seen the show, particularly because a previous ad reportedly caused someone to be hospitalized.

A Reddit user recently shared that her sister, named Carol, has schizophrenia and has experienced psychotic episodes in the past.

Carol went to the emergency room, convinced she was losing her mind, after a strange ad popped up on her smart refrigerator apologizing for upsetting her.

People are now questioning whether the original post was genuine. A man came forward saying he first shared the picture of the smart fridge, and the most popular comment on his post was a joke: ‘Imagine you’re named Carol, you’re experiencing psychosis, and this is what you see on your fridge.’

A recent online post has sparked worry that smart devices are displaying ads that look like personal notifications.

The newest billboard is even more unsettling than the previous one, and it’s sparked a conversation about how scary this whole situation must be for anyone named Carol who isn’t familiar with the show.

One person commented, “They’re going to drive another woman named Carol to a mental breakdown, aren’t they?” Another asked if a woman named Carol hadn’t already experienced a psychiatric episode after seeing a similar ad on her refrigerator.

However, some people weren’t concerned, and one person suggested the post about a psychotic episode was “probably just creative writing, not something that really happened.”

People were impressed with Apple TV’s marketing for the show. One viewer said they loved the campaign, and another called it “very clever.”

Someone else pointed out that while the voicemail felt subtly hostile, this situation seemed much more serious. They questioned whether the location was visible from the person’s home or along their usual route to the store.

I’ve been digging into Pluribus, and if you’re curious, I found some really interesting articles. One explains just how dangerous the Darién Gap is – it’s pretty scary stuff! Another one dives into a fan theory about how ‘Carol’ could have the perfect ending. And, good news for those of us who like to know what we’re getting into, it seems we shouldn’t expect a big, shocking twist like you’d get in an M. Night Shyamalan movie.
