There have been whispers for years that Guerrilla Games was creating a multiplayer game based in the world of Horizon. Now, it’s official – the game has been announced!
I’m really interested in Horizon Hunters Gathering, which is launching on PlayStation 5 and PC with crossplay. It looks like a complex game, but at its core, it plays a lot like Monster Hunter, but with some unique new ideas.
Players select from a diverse group of Hunters, each offering a unique way to play and a different weapon. They then team up with friends or computer-controlled allies to battle a dangerous robotic enemy. The developers emphasize that the combat is strategic, fast-paced, and rewards skillful play, making it the core experience of the game.
Sometimes, the game feels like a roguelite, which I really dig. While I’m out hunting, I’m constantly grabbing new abilities and buffs. Taking down enemies unlocks cool perks and lets me upgrade my weapons. Basically, each run is about figuring out the best combination of power-ups to take on the toughest bosses and actually win!
The game is still in development, but currently features two modes. Machine Incursion is a fast-paced mission where waves of machines, led by a powerful boss, emerge from underground. Cauldron Descent is a more extensive, multi-part challenge where Hunters navigate constantly changing rooms, facing tough machine battles and discovering hidden doors that offer rewards to prepared teams.
Hunters Gathering is a central social hub where you can create and personalize your own campsite. Here, you can improve your equipment, connect with other players, and simply relax and chat.
The game’s cartoonish style might not appeal to everyone, but I actually like it. I’m still not completely convinced it will be good, but I’m definitely keeping an eye on it. I think Sony might be a little too optimistic about the Horizon series overall, but this particular spin-off definitely has potential.
A playtest for the game will be held later this month on PlayStation 5 and PC. You can join by signing up for the PlayStation Beta Program, which will let you try the game and give the developers valuable feedback.
