PlayStation’s Best-Selling PC Games Revealed, Have Made More Than $1 Billion – Report

Sony has traditionally released its games only on PlayStation consoles. However, the company recently started publishing games for PC as well, and it’s proving to be a successful move. So far, these PC releases have generated over $1.2 billion in revenue.

According to a new report by Alinea Analytics, Helldivers 2 is the top-selling PlayStation game on PC, with over 12.7 million copies sold. The findings are based on Alinea’s own research.

According to the report, Sony’s five best-selling PC games on Steam have sold over 43 million copies, generating $1.5 billion in revenue. Sony earned $1.2 billion of that, while Valve, the platform owner, took a commission of $350 million or more. Valve’s cut of PC game sales on Steam is 30%, decreasing to 25% after a game earns $10 million and then to 20% after $50 million.

Okay, so Helldivers 2 is really grabbing people. I’ve seen the stats, and it’s wild – about 20% of us have already sunk over 100 hours into the game! Plus, every day, over 200,000 of us on Steam are jumping in to spread managed democracy. It’s seriously addictive!

Sony is doing well with its PC game releases, but recent data suggests that interest in playing PlayStation games on PC might be decreasing.

Sony has successfully brought its biggest game franchises to PC. Now that most players who were eager to try these games have already done so, newer releases are naturally reaching a smaller audience. Our data confirms this trend.

Alinea noted that PlayStation’s main challenge is finding the right timing for releasing games on PC. They need to balance satisfying PC gamers who want new releases quickly with protecting sales of their PlayStation 5 games.

Sony doesn’t follow a set timeline for bringing PlayStation games to PC, but they do promise to release their online service games on both consoles and PC at the same time. For their major exclusive PS5 games, however, you can expect a wait of at least one year before they become available on PC.

Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, explained that Sony intentionally doesn’t release its games on both PlayStation and PC at the same time to support and strengthen the PlayStation console platform. He stated that their focus is on a careful, planned release strategy for their story-driven, single-player games, which have been central to PlayStation’s success.

The Alinea report suggests Sony may need to rethink its plans because of the upcoming Steam Machine launch in 2026. This new six-inch PC, designed like a console, has the potential to significantly change the gaming landscape.

According to Rhys Elliott from Alinea, if Steam starts offering its own hardware capable of playing PlayStation games, it will become a competitor, and that could force PlayStation to change how and when it releases games. As Steam expands beyond simply selling games to become a more open platform with wider capabilities, PlayStation may face increased pressure to adapt.

Microsoft has a history of releasing games on PC, and they’ve suggested their next Xbox might follow this trend, offering a more PC-like experience. In contrast, Nintendo doesn’t release any of its games on PC.

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive – the company that owns Rockstar Games – recently stated that the gaming world is increasingly shifting its focus to PC gaming.

Strauss Zelnick told CNBC that gaming is shifting towards PCs, and the industry is favoring open platforms over closed ones. However, he believes immersive, lengthy gaming experiences played on large screens will remain popular, defining ‘console’ as the game itself rather than the hardware.
