PlayStation to phase out PSN name in 2026

In 2026, PlayStation will retire the PlayStation Network name to better reflect the wide range of its growing online services.

PlayStation Network (PSN) has long been a core part of the PlayStation experience, connecting players for online games and social interaction. Now, Sony is making a significant update by completely removing the PSN brand.

According to a report from Insider Gaming, Sony has informed developers they’re dropping the names “PlayStation Network” and “PSN.” This change aims to better reflect the wide range of their growing online services.

What does the phasing out mean for players?

Even though the PlayStation Network name is changing, everything you enjoy about it will stay the same. You’ll still be able to connect with friends, play online with others, and earn trophies – all the core features will continue to work as usual.

So, the biggest thing with this update is really just a change to the look and feel – the old branding is going away. It’s not going to change how the game plays, thankfully, it’s mostly cosmetic.

Sony stated that developers will receive advance notice of changes planned for September 2026, coinciding with a fall update. According to Inside Gaming, the changes are scheduled for September of that year.

Sony hasn’t revealed a new name for its online services yet, even as it stops using the PlayStation Network name and older designs. It’s also unclear if they plan to rebrand it at all.
