Sony, the manufacturer of PlayStation, has called off the development of two games that offer continuous service, and it’s been rumored that one of these games was set within the realm of the God of War series.
According to a statement made to Bloomberg, Sony has announced the cancellation of not one but two upcoming live-service titles – one from Bend Studio and the other from Bluepoint Games. It appears that the project Bluepoint Games were developing was supposed to be a live-service God of War game.
Sony has indicated that its studios will remain operational, but has not yet clarified if project cancellations may lead to job reductions. Nonetheless, Sony is collaborating with the studios to identify future production plans.
Previously, Bend Studio announced that they were developing a new game (IP), although it’s uncertain if this is the same game that was eventually canceled. In the year 2021, Sony purchased Bluepoint Games, a team known for remaking Demon’s Souls for the PS5. Interestingly, before the cancellation of their upcoming project, Bluepoint reportedly collaborated with Bend Studio on God of War Ragnarok from 2020 to 2022.
The ongoing efforts by PlayStation for their live-service projects have seen varying outcomes. For instance, Helldivers 2 garnered immense popularity and numerous accolades, but unfortunately, Concord, another project, turned out to be a significant flop leading to its permanent closure and the shuttering of Firewalk Studios.
Back in December of ’23, Sony had to pull the plug on the multiplayer aspect of The Last of Us, a game I’ve been eagerly anticipating. This decision came after months of speculation following Bungie’s (the studio Sony recently acquired) reported assessment of their ability to keep players engaged in the long run.
