PlayStation brings cloud streaming to PS Portal for PS5 games you already own

PlayStation recently released a major update for the PS Portal, allowing PlayStation Plus Premium members to stream a variety of PS5 games directly through the cloud – meaning you don’t need a PS5 console to play them.

As a PlayStation fan, I was really excited about the PS Portal, but at first, it only let you play games by connecting it to your PS5 console. Thankfully, Sony started testing something new towards the end of 2024 – cloud streaming! This meant you could play games directly over the internet, but initially, it was only available for a limited selection of games included with PlayStation Plus.

For the first time, players can stream their PS5 games directly, without needing to connect a console.

The new update lets you stream thousands of PS5 games you already own – like Astro Bot, GTA 5, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Fortnite, and Resident Evil 4 – directly from the cloud. It also works with hundreds of games available through PlayStation Plus, including titles like God of War Ragnarök and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.

Other new features in the PS Portal’s cloud update

The home screen now has a fresh look with separate tabs for Cloud Streaming and Search, in addition to the existing Remote Play feature.

They’ve also added a bunch of cool stuff like 3D audio – seriously, it makes the game way more immersive! Plus, there’s now an in-game store, which is handy. They didn’t forget about making the game playable for everyone either, with a ton of accessibility options. And finally, I can lock things down with a passcode, which is great for keeping my progress safe.

With cloud streaming, you can now buy games, send and accept multiplayer invites, and even play games without needing your PS5 console turned on. This is especially useful if someone else is already using the console and you still want to play or connect with friends.

This announcement follows the recent launch of the ROG Xbox Ally, a handheld device from Microsoft and Asus that lets users enjoy Xbox games on a Windows PC.
