Is it possible that Sony took notice of gamers’ feedback and strategized accordingly? If recent rumors are accurate, the PlayStation 6 is set to hit the shelves in digital and traditional editions, each featuring a disk drive, as reported by Insider Gaming.
PlayStation 6 with a disk drive after all
It’s rumored that the PlayStation 6 will feature a removable disc drive upon its launch, based on information obtained by The Insider Gaming editors from multiple unnamed sources within Sony. The leaks hint at the possibility of two versions being released: one digital-only version without a drive and another standard edition that includes a disc drive.
The digital version of the drive can also be upgraded to the standard version, offering a separate accessory option. This opens up the chance to upgrade the digital edition to the full version. It’s been confirmed that Sony plans to continue releasing physical game versions. This shift is apparently driven by a need to cut down on production and shipping costs during an unpredictable economic period. Unlike Microsoft’s new Xbox, which emphasizes performance as its main selling point and therefore commands a higher price, Sony seems to be taking a different approach.
1) Given that Insider Gaming has correctly foretold events like the PS5 Pro, these rumors appear highly probable. Given the intense criticism surrounding digitalization and high console prices, Sony’s shift towards physical drives appears to be a well-justified decision.
