Playing Gracie Darling: Ivy’s Identity Details Get Revealed In Season 1 Finale

The finale of the popular streaming drama Playing Gracie Darling seemed to wrap things up nicely, but a final surprise involving the character Ivy Moon was revealed. Ivy, portrayed by Coco Jack Gillies, appears throughout the Australian series, with a significant role in the sixth and final episode.

A new crime drama set in 2025 is now available on Netflix in the U.S. It first premiered on Paramount+ in August. The show centers around Joni Gray, a psychologist haunted by the unsolved disappearance of a friend during a teenage seance.

The story begins when Joni returns to her quiet hometown following a new disappearance. As she investigates, long-buried trauma resurfaces, and the town starts looking into the fates of both Joni’s childhood friend and the latest missing girl.

You can now watch all six episodes of Playing Gracie Darling on Netflix in the U.S. (Find out about other new shows coming to Netflix in December here).

Who Is Ivy In Playing Gracie Darling?

Ivy Moon, played by Coco Jack Gillies, first appears in the first episode of the show Playing Gracie Darling. She’s a patient in the psychiatric ward that Joni visits during the premiere.

In the first episode, Joni (played by Morgana O’Reilly, known from The White Lotus) talks to Ivy while Ivy is being held in custody. During their conversation, Ivy tries to harm herself, but Joni intervenes and stops her. This act makes Joni feel a small sense of relief from her own guilt.

As a critic, I found Joni deeply haunted by Ivy. She’s constantly revisiting their interactions, desperately hoping Ivy can turn things around. It’s clear Ivy represents more than just a troubled teen for Joni; she’s become a stand-in for the guilt Joni carries over the disappearance of her childhood friend, Gracie Darling, lost during a séance gone awry. The film subtly suggests that Joni believes Ivy’s salvation is tied to her own – if Ivy can find her way, Joni can finally begin to heal.

As the story unfolds, Joni discovers what happened to the missing girls. She learns that Gracie’s family was hiding a dangerous secret, and the girls disappeared when they started to uncover it.

With everything settled, Ivy reappears, this time in Joni’s garden. During the finale, Joni steps outside for a break and finds the troubled teen sitting there again. Joni wonders what brought her back, questioning how she got there and if she managed to leave the treatment facility she was staying at.

When Joni went to speak with Ivy again, the girl vanished. Joni then called her coworker, Liam, who revealed they’d been trying to reach her for a while. Sadly, they told her that Ivy had died by suicide.

Previously, everyone thought Joni’s visions were caused by the painful memories of Gracie’s story coming back to haunt her. But Ivy showing up changes things, making it unclear if that’s really the reason.

Throughout the show, every supernatural element had been explained away – until now. The latest hints suggest Joni’s visions might be real, and she could be seeing ghosts or possess some kind of psychic ability.

The series ends with Joni in a state of uncertainty. Viewers are left questioning whether she’s experienced something truly spiritual, or if her final vision was just a product of her past trauma. The last image we see is the shack where Gracie disappeared, which suggests there might be a darker force at work within the old building, or that Joni’s mind is simply deceiving her.

Since Netflix hasn’t announced a second season yet, it’s uncertain if viewers will ever find out why Ivy showed up at Joni’s house. However, if the show proves popular enough, a second season is likely to be considered.
