Players shocked as US TikTok ban renders Marvel Snap unplayable

Due to the U.S. ban on TikTok, the platform owned by ByteDance Ltd., Marvel Snap fans found themselves unable to access the service.

Besides operating TikTok, ByteDance also owns Nuverse, the company responsible for publishing Marvel Snap. Consequently, this mobile game is bound by the laws that prevent ByteDance, TikTok, and any of its U.S.-based subsidiaries from distributing, maintaining, or updating applications within the United States.

Individuals vented their surprise about the ban on social media platforms, many stating they hadn’t realized the connection between Marvel Snap and TikTok ownership. As the prohibition became enforceable on January 19th, queries for Marvel Snap on search engines significantly increased.

Marvel Snapped

On Twitter/X, Second Dinner announced that the game MARVEL SNAP is currently not accessible in American app stores and cannot be played within the United States at this time. This unexpected downtime was not something they had planned.

If there was a surprise event, why did the IN-GAME alert about it occur immediately after it happened? It seems you must have pre-programmed that feature into the game prior to the ban taking effect.

Nevertheless, the developer underlined their ongoing dedication to the game by stating, “MARVEL SNAP is here to stay. We’re diligently working towards its prompt release and will keep you informed when we have further news to share.

Users on Twitter expressed puzzlement as to why the Marvel Snap developers were taken aback by the shutdown, given that the legislative details guiding it had been established in April 2024.

Mobile Legends gone with a Bang Bang

In addition to Marvel Snap, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (often shortened to MLBB), which boasts one of the largest esports viewerships globally, has also faced a ban in the United States. This is because its developer, Moonton, falls under the umbrella of Nuverse.

In contrast to its massive appeal in East Asia, the game, much like League of Legends, doesn’t enjoy the same level of fame in the U.S. However, the ban came as a surprise and left some devoted fans upset because they had just lost one of their beloved games.

In addition to Moonton’s main title, there are also other games such as the mobile Role Playing Game (RPG) “Guardian of Worlds” and the spin-off of Mobile Legends Battle Arena (MLBB), called “Mobile Legends: Journey Beyond the Battlegrounds”.

Or in a shorter form: Apart from its primary game, Moonton offers titles like the mobile RPG “World Guardian” and the MLBB spin-off named “Mobile Legends: Beyond the Battlefield”.

Following several months of debate and uncertainty, the TikTok ban has officially begun. TikTok maintains that the proposal for it to be sold to an American buyer is not feasible. Nevertheless, YouTube personality Mr Beast and a group of investors have indicated their intentions to submit a bid for the platform. Additionally, there have been recent whispers about Elon Musk potentially acquiring the app as recently as last week.
