Players are already creating ‘skins’ for Steam Machine. Once purchased, you will be able to turn the hardware into a Portal Cube

Valve’s Steam Machine has a simple, cube-like shape that encourages customization. One artist has designed a 3D-printable case that turns the PC into a replica of the iconic Weighted Companion Cube from the game Portal. This makes the device a striking display piece for any gamer’s space, whether it’s a bedroom or living room.

A Reddit user named Ellanasss has shared the design for a Steam Machine case, and it’s available for free! All you need is a 3D printer to make it. If you don’t have one, don’t worry – pre-made kits for customizing the case will also be available.

Steam Machine as a Portal Cube

This new hardware looks like a great starting point for customization. We can expect to see things like custom Minecraft blocks, unique designs for loot boxes from online games, and other interesting accessories for the Steam Machine soon. While other consoles have similar add-ons, they’re simpler to create for Valve’s device.

While the design is simple, it’s worth noting one potential problem: the cube appears to be covering the cooling vents. This might just be how it looks, though. Some people don’t think it’s a real issue.

Cooling is a lie by big companies to sell us more cold.

The Steam Machine stays cool thanks to a fan at the back. It’s important to keep this area clear of obstructions, just like all the other vents and controls. Luckily, the person who designed it already considered this and made sure it wouldn’t be a problem.

I modified the machine by opening up the air vents. It should now have airflow comparable to the original design, which is what I’m aiming for.

When designing a case for the Steam Machine, focusing on how well it works is most important, as performance is key. While looks are also a consideration, they shouldn’t be the main focus. Ultimately, this is gaming hardware, and while it can look good, its primary job is to perform well.
