Many players believe Cyberpunk 2077’s open world would be even better if it didn’t have one particular feature commonly found in sandbox games.
One common criticism of open-world games is their sheer size. While a huge map sounds great in advertising, it can lead to problems like repetitive environments, too many pointless items to collect, and boring tasks. Often, this also means spending too much time simply traveling from one place to another, with the map cluttered by unnecessary markers.
This common issue is typically resolved with a straightforward solution, and that held true in Cyberpunk 2077. Some players, though, feel it wasn’t needed in this game.
Slow (?) exploration of Night City
Fast travel has been a feature in games for years, but it’s particularly helpful in large, open-world titles. No matter how beautiful and detailed a game world is, players don’t always want to spend a lot of time simply traveling from one place to another.
Like many open-world games, Cyberpunk 2077 lets you quickly travel around the map. However, it’s unusual because a lot of players actually prefer not to use this fast travel feature. A recent Reddit post shows that many feel it’s unnecessary, and the post isn’t even really a debate – most people agree!
Many players on the discussion thread shared two primary reasons for avoiding fast travel: they enjoy driving the cars – particularly after improvements that made them more reliable and added the CrystalCoat feature – and the excitement of navigating Night City using parkour. The city’s design and atmosphere really encourage this kind of exploration, whether you’re cruising in a car, enjoying the scenery and music, or finding hidden parkour routes – similar to the Mirror’s Edge games – to get a unique view of the world.
However, some players feel the fast travel system isn’t very enjoyable or useful.
It seems like the developers intentionally made fast travel a bit inconvenient, requiring you to locate hard-to-reach spots. However, they clearly encourage you to use the vehicles, as they’re really well-designed and fun to drive.
Some players feel the game world is too small, suggesting this is why they don’t use the fast travel feature. However, that’s not really accurate. While the exact size of Cyberpunk 2077‘s world isn’t public, Night City itself is over 20 square kilometers. And that doesn’t include the areas surrounding the city, or the fact that the city is built on multiple levels, meaning you often spend as much time traveling up and down as you do across the map.
While games like The Witcher 3 have huge open worlds, Cyberpunk 2077’s map is incredibly detailed and filled with so much to do that many players actually prefer exploring on foot instead of using fast travel. Is that really a bad thing?
