Plane served with seizure notice after airline refuses to pay $1k delay compensation

After a passenger experienced a flight delay exceeding 13 hours, court officials entered a Ryanair plane because the airline hadn’t paid the required compensation.

At Linz Airport in Austria, authorities impounded a Boeing 737 after the airline failed to pay a court-ordered €890 (about $1,000) in compensation and legal fees. They posted a seizure notice inside the plane as a result.

Bailiffs place seizure notice on Ryanair plane

The Guardian reports that the problem began with a 13-hour delay on a flight from Linz to Mallorca in 2024.

The passenger ultimately booked a different flight and then requested a refund and additional compensation based on European passenger rights regulations.

A passenger successfully sued Ryanair after the airline didn’t pay what it owed. When Ryanair still refused to pay the $1,000, authorities in Austria were asked to legally enforce the court’s decision.

The unnamed passenger originally filed the complaint in 2024.

Okay, so this is crazy! Apparently, a bailiff actually came onto a Ryanair plane just as we were getting ready to take off for London. They were asking the flight crew if someone could pay a debt right then and there. But, because Ryanair doesn’t take cash on board, the crew just couldn’t settle it on the spot. It was a really awkward situation!

Instead, the bailiff put a notice on the aircraft indicating it had been seized as collateral. This means the plane is held as security for the outstanding debt, but it can still be flown as long as the debt isn’t paid.

If the payment isn’t made by the court’s deadline, the aircraft could be auctioned off to cover the outstanding debt.

As a frequent flyer, I’ve learned that if my flight is delayed by more than three hours, I might actually be able to get some money back! The EU has these rules protecting passengers, and depending on how far I was flying, I could get up to €600 in compensation. It’s good to know my rights!
