Pharrell Williams Says ‘There Wasn’t a Path Forward’ for Canceled Musical Biopic

It appears that Pharrell Williams and director Michel Gondry (known for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) have mutually decided to halt the production of their biopic about Williams’ childhood. In a statement to Variety on February 7, they explained that during the editing process, they collectively realized there was no viable way to tell the story as originally planned. They expressed appreciation for the efforts of the talented cast and crew, but unfortunately, they won’t be able to deliver this film at this time. However, they plan to collaborate with Universal Pictures again in the future on a different project. As of now, the film titled “Golden,” initially set for release on May 5, did not advance past the early stages of post-production. Vulture has reached out to Williams for additional comments.

The movie “Golden” features Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Quinta Brunson, Janelle Monáe, among others in undisclosed roles. The film was set to chronicle the life of a young man from Virginia Beach, with “Empire” offering an exclusive sneak peek. Last month, Williams shared details about the project with “Empire”, stating that it’s a vibrant portrayal of Black joy. He described the movie, which is set in the summer of 1977 in Virginia Beach, as an immersive musical experience where music plays a significant role, much like it did in films such as “Dirty Dancing” and “Grease”. The story follows a young man’s journey of self-discovery and chasing dreams, but it’s more than just a coming-of-age tale; it’s a joyous celebration of Black life, culture, and most crucially, Black happiness.

Indeed, a movie about Pharrell’s life titled “Piece by Piece” was released last October. This film delved beyond his childhood and incorporated Legos in an innovative way, with renowned artists like Gwen Stefani and Kendrick Lamar voicing themselves as colorful bricks. With two Pharrell movies within such a short span of time, it might have been premature, but let’s not let the talented cast for “Golden” go to waste as forgotten media. It would be a pity if Williams doesn’t release at least one song as a small consolation for those eager to see Da’Vine Joy Randolph on the big screen again.
