So, the folks at S-Game are really sticking to their guns about *Phantom Blade Zero*. They’ve said before it’s going to play more like *Devil May Cry* – fast-paced and stylish – and not *Dark Souls*. Now, the CEO, Liang, has clarified that you don’t *have* to be a combo master to actually beat the game. Basically, you can finish it even if you’re not worried about looking super cool while fighting, which is great news for us casual players!
According to combat director Qianli Ma, *Phantom Blade Zero* aims to combine the elegance of wuxia stories with the fast-paced action of kung fu. He told PCGamer (via GamesRadar) that the game’s combat is designed to feel fluid and engaging, almost like dancing.
Ma explained that the fast-paced combat in *Phantom Blade Zero* was achieved by prioritizing speed over perfectly precise controls. They intentionally made some design choices that allowed for quicker action, even if it meant players wouldn’t have complete control over every input.
Players who can get into a smooth, rhythmic state during battles will be able to perform impressive combos against enemies. But even if you just want to complete the game, the combat won’t be overly challenging. According to the developer, you can finish the game without mastering the system, though achieving a truly stylish and skillful playthrough is more difficult.
Many games now challenge players not by simply getting harder, but by encouraging them to improve their skills. This approach is similar to what we see in games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. While you can beat these games, the real challenge comes from striving for higher scores and better performance ratings.
Back in June 2024, S-Game clarified that *Phantom Blade Zero* isn’t a *Soulslike game. In a social media FAQ, the studio emphasized they never intended to create another game in that style. Instead, they’re aiming for fast-paced, combo-focused combat that feels both challenging and satisfying.
The developer clarified in the FAQ that players who’ve tried the demo should already understand this isn’t a *Soulslike game. They emphasized that they never intended to create one, explaining their goal is fast-paced, exciting combat focused on combos and rewarding skillful play.
However, *Phantom Blade Zero* will likely still draw inspiration from FromSoftware’s *Souls* games. The studio mentioned in an April interview that they were impressed by the level design in *Dark Souls*, especially how the levels were connected and flowed together in the earlier games.
According to a representative from S-Game, their game’s level design is heavily influenced by the intricate, connected worlds seen in games before *Elden Ring*. They emphasized that the team, particularly Liang who studied architecture, prioritizes creating levels that are complex, detailed, and feel truly expansive and immersive.
Phantom Blade Zero doesn’t yet have a release date. It is being developed for PC and PS5.
