Peter Molyneux Is Making His Last Game: “I Just Haven’t Got the Life Energy Left To Do This Again”

Following a career spanning more than forty years in the video game industry, Peter Molyneux says he plans to retire once he completes his latest project, the god game Masters of Albion-though whether or not to believe that remains to be seen.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Peter Molyneux described Masters of Albion as his “redemption title,” and stated definitively: “… it’s my last game. It just is.” The game was first revealed in August 2024 during Gamescom Opening Night Live, but Molyneux had actually been developing it privately for three years prior to the announcement.

Masters of Albion is currently being developed by 22cans, the independent studio founded by Peter Molyneux in 2012 after he left Lionhead Studios. This game puts players in charge of a medieval village, but a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Peter Molyneux is well-known for creating the Black & White god game and the first three Fable games. However, he’s just as famous for excitedly over-promising about his games before they come out. This often leads to players being let down when the final product doesn’t quite live up to the hype or misses features he’d talked about.

It’s good that Molyneux recognizes he sometimes overstates things. He told Edge: “I know people are going to say, ‘Come on, it won’t be your last game,’ but, you know, I’m 66 years old.” The experienced developer – who famously said in 2014 he’d “just gonna die” rather than retire – also explained: “I’m working as hard as I’ve ever worked in my life. And I just haven’t got the energy left to do this again.”

I was really surprised to hear that even after showing off Masters of Albion, Peter Molyneux hinted this new game might be his last. He was being really open – and a little bit darkly funny – about his habits, mentioning his smoking and drinking. It definitely made me think!

“I began to wonder what I should prioritize,” Molyneux explained in 2024. “I was 60 years old at the time, and it suddenly occurred to me that this upcoming game might be my last.” He clarified, “I’m not saying I’m retiring. I expect I’ll be found dead one morning, collapsed over my keyboard.”
