Peter Jackson, the director behind the original Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films, is considering making another Lord of the Rings movie. He previously directed The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.
In a recent interview with Empire marking the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, Peter Jackson confirmed that the long-rumored secret cut of the trilogy isn’t real. He explained that any additional footage would only add a few seconds in various places and wouldn’t be significant enough to warrant a separate release.
Peter Jackson wants to make a huge documentary about The Lord of the Rings films, filled with never-before-seen footage and a detailed look at how they were created. Getting the studio to approve the project has been difficult due to its scope. Here’s what Jackson has to say about it:
The video includes unused scenes, funny outtakes, and a glimpse into how the movies were made. However, I haven’t been able to convince the studio to release it yet, as it would be a significant project.
This isn’t the first time fans have seen behind-the-scenes footage from The Lord of the Rings films. Detailed bonus content, called the Appendices, has been included with the extended edition DVDs for years.
Even though a lot of behind-the-scenes footage already exists, Jackson’s statements suggest there’s still more content fans haven’t seen. While bloopers and details about the filmmaking process would be popular, different versions of scenes are probably what people would be most excited to see.
The extended editions might include familiar deleted scenes, like Arwen fighting in The Two Towers and a flashback of young Aragorn and Arwen in The Fellowship of the Ring. The documentary could also showcase previously unheard alternate takes.
I think Peter Jackson would be perfect for this project, especially considering how brilliantly he brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings to life. Beyond that, he’s proven his skill with documentaries. After finishing The Hobbit, he directed some incredible ones – everything from a powerful look at World War II in They Shall Not Grow Old to a celebration of The Beatles. That experience really shows he can handle a wide range of storytelling.
Although it’s not an official continuation of the original films, Peter Jackson is still connected to the world of The Lord of the Rings as the franchise grows. He produced the 2024 anime film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and is also producing a new movie, The Hunt for Gollum. Andy Serkis, who originally played Gollum, is directing, and Ian McKellen will return as Gandalf, hinting at a possible reunion between Gandalf and Frodo.
