Peter Jackson Doesn’t Miss Making ‘The Lord of the Rings’

Peter Jackson, the director famous for the early 2000s Lord of the Rings films, is still incredibly proud of the hugely successful fantasy series. However, he doesn’t necessarily look back on the making of the movies with fondness. The films earned almost $3 billion worldwide and established Jackson as one of the few directors capable of bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s complex books to life. It was a massive undertaking, and likely the most challenging project of his career.

Peter Jackson recently spoke with Empire Magazine to mark the 25th anniversary of the original Lord of the Rings movie, which came out in 2001. While the films were incredibly impactful – even winning him an Oscar for Best Director – Jackson isn’t confident he could recreate the experience today. And, surprisingly, he admits he doesn’t even feel a strong desire to revisit that period of his life.

Looking back, I can’t believe we ever attempted that. It seems impossible now! It’s a bit overwhelming to remember, honestly. We were all so young, full of energy, and maybe a little too optimistic.

I don’t dwell on the past. Those times have passed, and life moves forward – I’ve experienced a lot since then. However, I’m very proud of the movies I made.

Philippa Boyens, who worked closely with Jackson on the entire fantasy series—including all the Hobbit films and co-wrote them—agreed with his assessment. While the project always seemed incredibly challenging, Boyens felt confident Jackson could successfully finish it. She also stated:

I didn’t expect it to last very long – I figured maybe three months, tops. But there were times he really got it, understood what was happening. Like when he watched Gandalf fall, or battled the Balrog – those moments truly resonated with him.

Peter Jackson’s journey to create The Lord of the Rings films was a long and challenging one. He and his team spent years advocating for the project until they found support from Robert Shaye at New Line Cinema, who believed in his vision. Beginning in the late 1990s, Jackson and his crew meticulously considered every aspect of the production. They worked to faithfully adapt Tolkien’s complex and detailed books for the big screen, paying close attention to both the visual effects and the story’s many layers.

‘The Lord of the Rings’ Journey Continues With ‘The Hunt for Gollum’

New Line Cinema

It’s been over 20 years since Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy, and more than 10 years since The Hobbit films, but the franchise is returning to the big screen with a new live-action movie. This time, Andy Serkis, who famously played Gollum, is directing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The film will likely focus on the story hinted at in its title – the pursuit of Gollum.

While specific details are still secret, a new installment connected to Lord of the Rings is planned for release in December 2027. Fans are eager to learn who will star and what the story will be about. Actor Elijah Wood, who played Frodo, recently shared that the project is bringing together many of the original creative team. He’s excited about the reunion and that filming will take place in New Zealand, maintaining a strong connection to the original films. He described it as getting ‘that old machine up and running again’ with the right people involved.
