Peter Chernin’s The North Road Company Buys Mexico’s Perro Azul (EXCLUSIVE)

In 2022, Peter Chernin’s newly established media enterprise, the North Road Company, completed its initial acquisition in Latin America – Perro Azul, a prominent Mexican film and TV production company.

Blue Dog Productions, known for creating Netflix’s most-watched show in Mexico and Latin America titled “Who Killed Sara? (¿Quién mató a Sara?),” has recently made a deal. This deal will enable Blue Dog Productions to expand their storytelling ambitions, while simultaneously leveraging North Road’s strategic resources and expertise to share more captivating Latin American narratives with worldwide viewers.

In accordance with the agreement, the original co-founders of Perro Azul, Alexis Fridman and Juan Uruchurtu, will continue in their leadership positions. This includes Diego Rabasa and Julián de Tavira, who hold the titles of Executive Producers. From now on, Fridman and Uruchurtu will answer to Jan Frouman, who serves as President of North Road International.

Obtaining Perro Azul comes after North Road’s acquisition of Karga Seven Pictures, a prominent Turkish company known for creating and producing high-quality scripted films and TV shows. Notable productions by Karga Seven Pictures include “Midnight at the Pera Palace (Pera Palas’ta Gece Yarısı)”, a popular time-travel drama which was Turkey’s most-watched series on Netflix, and “Testament: The Story of Moses”, a docudrama series that ranked as Netflix’s top show in over 40 countries.

North Road’s collaborative productions across borders feature:
– “Bad Boy,” a gritty Israeli series penned by the original creator of “Euphoria,” Ron Leshem;
– “Heart of a Killer,” a pulse-pounding medical thriller starring actress Niv Sultan, who also appeared in “Tehran”; and
– “Suture,” an Emmy-winning Brazilian series brought to you by Zasha Robles, now streaming on Prime Video in Latin America and Portugal.

As a movie connoisseur, I’m elated to express that Latin America stands out as one of the world’s most dynamic and rapidly expanding territories for content production. This vibrant region presents an unparalleled chance for global audience engagement. Therefore, it’s with great pleasure that I announce our partnership with Perro Azul, a company esteemed by audiences, top-tier creatives, and industry buyers for their groundbreaking narratives and high-quality productions. We warmly welcome them to North Road as we collaborate to unveil their daring and cherished catalog to the global stage, furthering our strategic international growth.

Acquiring Perro Azul follows a period of substantial growth in Latin American content production, particularly driven by Mexico spearheading most of the expansion in this field.

Blue Dog has always been dedicated to narrating tales that challenge norms and showcase the depth and vibrancy of our culture,” Fridman stated. “We’re thrilled to partner with North Road – a company whose creative principles align with ours, and who are expanding into Latin America through us. With North Road’s strong backing and strategic insight, we can’t wait to amplify regional voices, tackle more daring projects, and produce content that resonates on a global scale.

Blue Dog Productions boasts a diverse slate of shows, with “The Secret of the River (El Secreto Del Río)” being Netflix’s most-watched Spanish series in October 2024. They have also created popular Netflix titles such as “Queens on the Run (Fuga de Reinas),” “Nothing to See Here (Ojitos De Huevo),” and “Daughter From Another Mother (Madre Solo Hay Dos).” In the pipeline for Blue Dog Productions is “Sin Querer Queriendo,” a biographical series about the entertainer and comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños, co-produced with THR3 Media Group for Max.

North Road’s latest offerings feature the action-comedy “Back in Action,” starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, which premiered on Netflix this past Friday. Additionally, they released “The Madness,” an action-packed conspiracy thriller headlined by Colman Domingo. The company is also responsible for producing “Love Is Blind” for Netflix and the sports anthology series “Game 7” that’s available on Prime Video.
