Streaming services kicked off the new year with a lot of fresh content. Starz added several titles slated for release in 2025, featuring Pete Davidson in his first true horror film and Sydney Sweeney in a modern Western crime thriller.
Pete Davidson explored horror-comedy with the 2022 film Bodies Bodies Bodies, but fully embraced the genre in a 2025 release. That year was also significant for Sydney Sweeney, who starred in several projects, including Americana. While both films premiered on Starz on January 1st, Davidson’s horror film, despite receiving negative reviews, ultimately gained more popularity.
Despite holding the number one spot, Davidson’s The Home quickly gained popularity, entering the charts at number three on January 3rd and climbing to number two the following day. Meanwhile, held steady at its initial position of on January 3rd and remained there on January 4th.
The movie The Home features Davidson as Max, a man with a difficult past. He’s sentenced to four months of community service at a retirement home, but quickly discovers the residents and staff are hiding unsettling secrets. He becomes caught up in a dangerous conspiracy that threatens everyone involved.
John Glover, Bruce Altman, Mary Beth Peil, Jessica Hecht, and Victor Williams were also part of the cast.
The movie The Home received very negative reviews when it was released in theaters on July 25th. Critics initially gave it a low 26% approval rating, and opinions haven’t improved much since then. After becoming available to stream, it still only holds a 30% rating from 54 critics, and the audience score is also low, at 58%, resulting in an overall negative reception.
Sydney Sweeney Had a Series of Disappointments in 2025
Sydney Sweeney had a fantastic 2023, boosted by the popular romantic comedy Anyone But You. A clever marketing campaign that hinted at a close connection between Sweeney and her co-star, Glen Powell, helped the film become a big hit. However, 2024 proved more challenging, with her first foray into the superhero genre, Madame Web, not performing as well.
In 2025, Sweeney also released the neo-Western thriller Americana. Unfortunately, the film wasn’t a commercial success, earning only about $500,000 despite costing $9 million to make. Critics gave it a 64% rating, while audiences scored it a bit higher at 78%.
While Americana was one of her projects this year, she also appeared in several other films. These included the crime thriller Echo Valley, produced by Ridley Scott and available on Apple TV, and Ron Howard’s psychological thriller Eden. She took a risk with the sports biopic Christy, which, despite positive reviews, didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $1.9 million globally. Her year ended on a high note with her final release, which proved to be her first major success, earning $133 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.
