The show is returning for its second season on Disney+, and after receiving a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes for the first season, expectations are high. Luckily, showrunners Dan Shotz and Jonathan E. Steinberg brought valuable experience to the production, particularly when tackling the complex ‘Sea of Monsters’ storyline.
Dan Shotz said that ‘Black Sails’ was a passion project for him and John, filmed over four seasons in South Africa. While he experienced some stress after working on it, he was eager to tackle ‘Sea of Monsters.’ Fortunately, the same talented visual effects team from ‘Black Sails’ was available, which gave him confidence they could deliver another high-quality production. He jumped back into the project, ready for the challenge.
We brought over the entire team from our previous show that handled all the water effects, sails, and ships, which was a big help. We’d already solved a lot of those challenges before, but this season presented some new ones. Even with our experience from the previous show, we still had to figure things out as we went.
‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Will Continue Beyond Season 2
Fantasy shows on streaming services haven’t always been successful – Disney canceled Willow after one season, The Wheel of Time stalled on Prime Video, and Netflix has seen many others fail. But Percy Jackson seems to be an exception. Disney+ has already renewed the show for a third season, even though the second season just launched.
Disney revealed back in March that the upcoming season of the show will follow the same format as the first two, adapting the next book in Rick Riordan’s series, The Titan’s Curse. Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, stated that the show quickly resonated with fans of all ages after its debut. With season two arriving this December, Disney is excited to confirm a third season is in development. Davis also expressed gratitude to the show’s cast, creative team, 20th Television, and the producers for their work in bringing Rick Riordan’s world to life with such detail and creativity.
