Disney+ is hugely popular thanks to successful shows like Marvel, Star Wars, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. To better compete, Netflix should think about adapting Red Rising – it’s similar to Percy Jackson, but geared towards an adult audience.

While the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians hasn’t attracted viewers as quickly as the first, Season 1 was Disney+’s most popular original series outside of Star Wars and Marvel. This demonstrates that the show is a big success for Disney.

This success proves that other streaming platforms, such as Netflix, should think about adapting popular franchises too – especially something like Pierce Brown’s Red Rising series, which would be perfect for a television show.

Red Rising Is Basically Percy Jackson for Adults

A Red Rising Adaptation Has the Potential To Be Legendary

Pierce Brown’s Red Rising series is a sweeping science fiction story set on a future Mars. It centers around Darrow, a member of the lowest social class, known as a “Red,” who goes undercover within the ruling class, the Golds, to start a revolution. The series combines thrilling political maneuvering, violent combat, and thoughtful themes about allegiance, control, and the price of fighting back, all unfolding in a grand, visually stunning space setting.

Currently, six books are available in the Red Rising saga: Red Rising, Golden Son, Morning Star, Iron Gold, Dark Age, and Light Bringer. The seventh and last book, Red God, is expected to be released around summer 2026. The series stands on its own, but fans of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson who are looking for more grown-up stories might especially enjoy the first book.

The story of Red Rising borrows a lot from classic Greek and Roman myths. Similar to how Percy Jackson characters train at Camp Half-Blood, the main character, Darrow, joins the House of Mars at a special Institute. Because of these similarities, readers who enjoyed Percy Jackson and are looking for a more mature, intense story with mythological roots will likely love Red Rising.

What Is the Best Medium for a Red Rising Adaptation?

Animation Would Best Capture Pierce Brown’s Masterpiece

Adapting Brown’s series would be great in any format, but animation would be ideal. It could truly bring the story’s unique characters and vast world to life. Animation would also allow for a full realization of the epic scope and fantastical aspects of the saga, which might be difficult to achieve with live-action filmmaking.

As a huge fan of Red Rising, I’ve always imagined the characters in a very specific way. It’s tough, though, because the sizes are so different! Some, like Ragnar and the Telemanus, are giants – seven or even eight feet tall! Others, like Sevro, are relatively short, but still almost six feet. That makes a live-action adaptation really tricky. But with animation, they can finally bring the characters and the world exactly as Pierce Brown created them. It means we’ll get a truly faithful adaptation of the whole Red Rising story, and that’s what I’ve been hoping for!
