Percy Jackson Season 2’s New Character Is Officially Pointless

Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has arrived on Disney+, and while the first three episodes are excellent – even for book fans like myself – there’s one issue: a new character created for the show feels completely unnecessary.

I was so excited for season two of Percy Jackson, but then I heard they were adding a brand new character—one that wasn’t in the books at all! A lot of fans immediately hated the idea, and honestly, I was a little worried too. I tried to stay hopeful, though, and see how it would play out.

I initially hoped the new character would be a good addition. The Percy Jackson books have successfully made some changes that strengthened the story and developed the characters well. However, this new change isn’t one of them. To be blunt, Alison Simms feels completely unnecessary.

Alison Simms Was Created For Percy Jackson Season 2

Alison Simms is the daughter of the god Apollo and a former camper at Camp Half-Blood who has grown up. Now living in the human world, she strongly supports Kronos and joins Luke’s forces. She appears in two scenes where she demonstrates her skill with a bow and arrow and her aggressive nature.

Alison’s character was brought onto the Disney+ fantasy series to show that Luke isn’t the only one who feels let down by the gods. The influence of Kronos is expanding and appears to be more widespread than anyone realizes.

While it’s possible this new character could fit into the story considering Luke is building a powerful force, the issue is that giving her lines and screen time takes away from the established plot and characters from the original book.

Alison Simms Has Done Absolutely Nothing To Help The Story

Alison Simms’ character has had two major moments so far: a showdown with Grover while he was searching for Pan, and a fight with Percy on the ship, the Princess Andromeda. These events don’t happen in the original book, and honestly, they haven’t really added anything positive to the story.

The opening scene felt unnecessary. The show reveals Luke is connected to other half-bloods fairly quickly, and the book already establishes this – it specifically mentions six more joining him, including a character named Chris Rodriguez who appears on the Princess Andromeda. Introducing a completely new character just to demonstrate this felt like a detour.

The second scene felt unnecessary; it mostly involved a character falling off a boat and being rescued by giants. Given that Percy Jackson & The Olympians already has plenty of action, this scene didn’t add much. Plus, the fight choreography wasn’t as good as in other parts of the show.

Luke isn’t featured much in The Sea of Monsters, which means Alison Simms’ character doesn’t get a meaningful role and feels like an unnecessary addition to the story. If the show wanted to demonstrate that Luke has more demigod allies in season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, they could have simply included them as background characters in scenes already present in the book.
