A scene from the season 2 finale of Percy Jackson and the Olympians further demonstrates that the Disney+ series is a more faithful adaptation of the books than the earlier movies. The Percy Jackson book series has been brought to life on screen twice, first as a pair of films. However, those movies had significant issues, which led to the creation of the new TV show.
Critics, general viewers, and book fans are all responding well to the new Disney+ TV show, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Unlike the previous movies, this adaptation stays much closer to the original story, making it a more satisfying experience overall.
One scene from Percy Jackson season 2, episode 2 proves this, if it were not already evident.
Percy Jackson Season 2 Includes Some Iconic Grover Book Moments
Percy Jackson season 2 key art of Grover, Percy, and Annabeth in front of a sea monster’s tentacles.
In season two of Percy Jackson, Grover is kidnapped by a cyclops while the heroes are searching the Sea of Monsters, sending Percy and Annabeth on a rescue mission. Because of this, Grover is missing for a large part of the second book. However, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series has cleverly addressed this. In the second episode, Grover connects with Percy through his dreams, allowing them to communicate using an empathetic connection.
This is a clever way to include Grover in the TV series and adapt a significant storyline from the books that wasn’t heavily featured in the films. In a funny scene, Grover even dresses up as a bride – pretending to be a cyclops – to trick Polyphemus, a cyclops with poor vision, into not eating him.
This scene has become a fan favorite from the books, with viewers enjoying Grover’s humorous act of pretending to be a cyclops to distract enemies and give Percy and Annabeth time to rescue him. While the movies briefly referenced this moment, the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians series will explore it more fully throughout season 2.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians Is Less Afraid To Be Silly Than The Movies Were
Disney/David Bukach
The show improves on the movies by including details that weren’t in them, and by confidently embracing the more lighthearted parts of the Percy Jackson books. The movies, on the other hand, immediately tried to make the characters seem older, instead of allowing them to develop naturally as the story progressed.
I was honestly worried about Grover in the show! In the books, he changed so much – he started out sweet and a little shy, but ended up feeling like just another ‘best friend’ character. But I’m so relieved that season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is keeping that funny, memorable part of his story. It really shows they’re understanding his character and letting him – and all the characters – grow naturally throughout the series. It’s great to see them getting it right!
