By the close of February, gamers will be able to acquire Monster Hunter Wilds, following a preview of the open beta this month. There appears to be significant excitement for the follow-up game, but Monster Hunter Wilds faces a considerable challenge in surpassing the sales figures achieved by its predecessor, Monster Hunter World. In just the previous quarter, Monster Hunter World managed to sell an additional million units, and it’s still going strong without any signs of slowing down.
Through Automaton, Capcom recently disclosed their financial data for the last quarter ending December 2024. The latest figures indicate that Monster Hunter World has reached a staggering 28.1 million copies sold, making it Capcom’s most successful game to date and a highly consistent seller over the past year. According to the data from Capcom’s financial report in March 2024, approximately 1 million copies of Monster Hunter World have been sold every three months.
2024 saw a massive surge in sales for Monster Hunter World’s DLC expansion, Iceborne, as it moved an impressive 900,000 units during the year-end months. Holiday discounts on both Iceborne and its original game, coupled with the frenzy surrounding Monster Hunter Wilds, certainly didn’t hurt these numbers. No matter the reason, it’s clear that I, as a gamer, am not alone in my love for this franchise – with a staggering 108 million units sold, Monster Hunter has proven itself to be one of Capcom’s most triumphant franchises, trailing only behind Resident Evil’s impressive 167 million unit sales.
It’s highly likely that Capcom will boost Monster Hunter’s overall sales when Monster Hunter World: Next Generation launches on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 28th. Just this week, Capcom unveiled a sneak peek at the first post-release update for Monster Hunter World: Next Gen, featuring the return of Mizutsune, a powerful Leviathan-class monster.
